Coughing and sneezing?

Hi everyone,

Since Friday Millie has coughed and sneezed a hell of a lot! The sneezes sound wet if that makes sense. I'm already going to the vets tomorrow with Chico my rat and can just as easily take her along. Does anyone know what this could be and if I'm worrying over nothing?

Lightbulb Re: Coughing and sneezing?

Dogs can get "flu" like infections caused by viruses and just like human forms they prefer cold dry weather to propagate. When the immune system is under pressure a secondary infection (bacterial ?) can get a foot hold where it would normally have been suppressed without being noticed, this might explain the wet-cough if there is fluid build up in the lungs.

Not much can be done for the virus unless it is serious, treatment with antivirals is not (IME) common, but dishing out antibiotics is a popular "cure".

Non-mucus producing foods and lots of liquids, light exercise until well.

Re: Coughing and sneezing?

Thank you very much for your help! I didn't even consider flu as she's had all her injections and never missed one!

Re: Coughing and sneezing?

Sounds as if its an upper respiratory tract infection - possibly kennel cough.

Ring your vet first before taking her into the surgery as it is very contagious and she may need antibiotics to prevent a secondary infection.

Sorry I didn't mean to frighten you. Upper respiratory tract infections and particularly Kennel Cough are extremely common and usually spread all over the UK at this time of year because its so contagious.

Its quite rare for a secondary infection to occur and the cough/sneezing usually only takes about 5 days to subside. They are normally fine in themselves otherwise.

Hope this reassures you.
