Glucosamine - which form?
I feel like I'm muscling in with new threads, however, I'd love to know how those with arthritic dogs incorporate glucosamine into their dogs diets.
Also, would it be safe to add glucosamine to a kibble that already contains it? |

My dogs are not arthritic but I give them Glucosamine daily. As it has a synergistic effect with Chondroitin I give them both. I use human supplements as it means we can all take the same stuff. HCl is of higher quality than KCl I give my dogs one tablet of Chondromax daily Glucosamine Chondroitin - High Strength Glucosamine and Chondroitin Tablets | Vitamins & Supplements from Healthspan They also get glucosamine via Cetyl-M which has 250mg of HCl glucosamine per tablet, they get 2 each per day. I prefer to choose the quality and quantity of the supplements I use rather than rely on what the food company puts in their food. I also feed raw. |

Re: Glucosamine - which form?
Kc was diagnosed with arthritis in the wrist at 18 months old and now has it really bad in both front legs
She is on metacam and has been for years but also supplement her to reduce the amount of metacam she needs She also goes to hydrotherapy fortnightly.I supplement her with Flexi joints from vetvits Flexi-Joints for Dogs for Healthy Canine Joints | VetVits Pet Health | Developed by Vets which I find are excellent and working well for her Over the years we had good results with Seraquin and also Cortaflex. Kc also wears a Bioflow collar which I think really made a difference Hoping to receive new collar this week and can't wait! ![]() I also feed her Fish4Dogs (grain free kibble) with a couple of raw meals a week.

Re: Glucosamine - which form?
I think the best form of Glucosamine is pure powder. In there you only got glucosamine and no filling stuff. Like in the tablets are fillers …starch or any other worthless materials. It is no good to by the cheap stuff just because it is cheap…compare the ingredients …like that you can find out how much good is really in there......and how much good you get for your money!
Plus another thing if you buy from a cheap shop… you never know if they stored the tablets in the right way, some times you find them in between washing powder and soaps and for me that is not a good thing nore an option to buy from there… |

I wasn't aware that you can feed raw as well as feeding a kibble in the week. It's something I'd be interested in as I'm sure she'd appreciate the variety! Quote:

I'm sure I wrote a long reply
![]() Kc Mac: I wasn't aware that you could go part raw - I always assumed it was all or nothing? I'd definitely be interested in her having a combined diet. Thanks for all your suggestions so far - I'm slowly working my way through all the info! |

Pure Glucosamine is found in the joints of other animals, so without any form of heating or chemical extraction process feed raw joints and carcasses, that way the Glucosamine is pure and untainted also in a bio-available manner. (All supplements are heat treated for long shelf lives.) I would be very interested to see some statistics on arthritic problems in dogs broken down by age (implying an early on-set maybe due to duff genes) and by feed (factory/tinned food vs raw/BARF etc.) I do find it sadly amusing where people discover their dog is arthritic and only at that point consider to learn about how the food they feed their dog can affect health. Just my personal point of view but I think feeding a diet that covers the likes of Glucosamine and EFAs without processed "supplements" is better for both dog and human, after all a supplement is only there to provide something missing in the normal diet. Why wait until your dog is sick before providing the "cure" ? |

Yes unprocessed natural Glucosamine are best ! yes I agree 100% Glucosamine is an amino sugar compound produced by the body. Though it is common in the liver and kidneys, it is most often found in cartilage but if your dog has got problems like arthritis you need to give supplements to support him with his needs. How on the other hand how will you get the right amount of like glucosamine in to the dog? Feeding him just on gristle and bones will it work?… I don’t think. the question was: how those with arthritic dogs incorporate glucosamine into their dogs? Glucosamine - which form? So my answer was to take the pure powder instead of the tablets. Another thing arthritis in a dog … it is not always the case of wrong food! Last edited by unicorn; 07-02-2012 at 10:52 AM.. |
