Dog heart murmurs

Can you tell me more about them? Any experiences of having a dog with a heart murmur yourself?

I was told when I adopted Katy that she had a mild heart murmur that she would likely grow out of. She is nearly 6 months, and now I am starting to think I can feel her heart beating irregularly when she is lying with her chest on me, and I wonder if that is even possible. Then I think she's just going to drop down dead one day if she's been running. I'm just over-thinking things as usual, but would still like to hear if anyone has been through the same thing.

I'm planning on taking her for a general check-up anyway around 6 months, so the murmur can be checked.

Re: Dog heart murmurs

Low grade heart mumours in pups can get better I have heard of it, but even if they dont they can still remain low grade and not cause any problems. My Samoyed I rescued about 3 and half years old, was found to have a low grade mumur on a regular check up or a check for something else, I think going from memory he was probably about 5ish when they found it. It never got worse and it never caused any problems. He was getting on for 12 when he died, and he died of a blood disorder totally unrelated.

All I did was have him checked out regularly to make sure there was no progression, although the vet did say bring him in if there was any decrease in exercise tolerance or expecially if coughing after exercise anytime.

Re: Dog heart murmurs

I don`t have any personall experience, but i have also heard taht a pup with a slight heart murmer, usually grows out of it,
They are graded 1-6,5 and above usually requires medication, and if 4 will usually get worse over time.
alot of top althetes have heart murmers, adn have no ill effects.
some breeds are more prone to heart porblems, cavs, dobermans etc.
wev`e had few at the rescue with "heart murmers"but it ends ups they were just too wriggly in initial exam and when under anaesthetic it isn`t apparent anymore.
I`m sure it will be nothing to worry about.

Re: Dog heart murmurs

Mine was found to have a heart murmur about 4 years ago while he was part of a research project into DCM, it hasn't affected him at all. The cardiologist told me heart murmurs in dogs are so common they can almost be considered normal, it's just that most don't get picked up unless they have an ECG or wear a Holter monitor for 24hours

Re: Dog heart murmurs

Finlay has a grade 3 heart murmur. I have been doing some research and generally grade 1-2 murmurs cause no problems at all throughout a dogs life. Grade 3 murmurs can become symptomatic in a small percentage of dogs as they age, but I didn't research the other grades lol. I don't think murmurs would cause an irregular heartbeat.

Re: Dog heart murmurs

Kenzie has/had a very slight murmur (they didn't tell me a grade) which was picked up at her 1 year check. However, when I had it checked out 3 months later just before I was about to ship her to NZ, the vet couldn't hear it at all

I've been told to just get it checked out every so often but that it's very unlikely it will cause any problems, assuming that she even has one
