Re: Grain Free Foods

Fish4dogs is grain free and would be good for your dog as it has lots of salmon in it, salmon oil is good for joints

Just that there has been research into connections between arthritis and the plant family solanaceae (potatoes, tomatos, peppers). All these plants contain alkaloids that may worsen arthritis in some cases, so you might be wapping something that doesn't do much harm for something that could do more harm.

Maybe raw feeding would be a better way ahead, excluding all cereals and potato too.
Yes, she was diagnosed almost a year ago now. The vet did say that it wasn't that bad but she does seem to suffer with it and can become lame. She's currently on a dose of Troxicil but I'm not keen on it if I'm honest. I'm looking to help as much as I can with her food/supplements etc.

Definitely food for thought!

I was thinking about fish oils and how they might be more beneficial. It seems to be a running theme with the senior dog foods.

I'm guessing beet pulp is another filler?

After reading some recent threads I've also found Simpsons Premium., however they seem to use beet pulp, as well as AG and Applaws - is it something I should avoid?

Fish oils are good, but you don't have to use food with them added in. You can get them separately and add them yourself.

Re: Grain Free Foods

I was looking into more fish based foods last night and really like the sound of Sardine Working Dog Complete - Fish4Dogs Online Shop

Also Acana Pacifica Dry Dog Food: Great selection at zooplus

And Orijen Adult Fresh Fish Dog Food: Great Deals on ORIJEN Dog Food at zooplus

In all honesty, I'm not sure which one to go for as they're all so similar. I know none of them would be a bad choice, it's just which would be the best!

I would say the best would be the one that your dog likes and looks best on You would need to be careful keep swopping and changing but you could make the transitions slowly and then decide. Perhaps start with most economical first (working out RDA etc. and not just going on price). If you're happy with your dog on it - look no further, if not try another

Re: Grain Free Foods

If I'm totally honest Orijen is a little out of my price range, especially knowing that the ingredients in Acana are very similar.

So that leaves Acana and Fish4Dogs which, going by the RDA, would make Fish4Dogs the most economical.

Decision made and 4kg Sardine trial size ordered!
