Rice and turkey

Hey guys

i recently changed my dog's diet - his a 6 year old staffy and was having skin issues anyway he seems alot better ( touch wood!) at the moment since switching diets. I have him on rice and mince turkey / chicken. I also put some cod oil in his food for his coat etc.

not sure if i'm over feeding him yet but he seems to gobble his food pretty quick when nice and warm - anyone else have their dog on rice / meat combo? any pros/cons?

Re: Rice and turkey

Do you cook the chicken? Or feed it raw?

I feed raw so I know what needs to be fed when feeding a raw diet to make it complete. Rough guide is 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% offal and 5% liver.

There is no need for carbs but I add some and I know some other raw feeders do, but that's personal choice.

But if you cook it and are feeding a home cooked diet I honestly have no idea what you need to add to make it complete.

I do know that just chicken, rice and cod liver oil isn't a complete diet.

I'm not saying change from home made, not if it's working, but you'll need to make sure your dog is getting all the needed calories, vitamins and minerals.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on the subject will be along soon.

Re: Rice and turkey

From everything I have read about home cooking supplements are an essential part as cooking changes the level of nutrients absorbed. Even raw feeders should use a variety of different types of meat protein rather than sticking to one type.

It's also worth noting that a dog allergic to certain cooked types of meats may not be when those same meats are fed raw.

Can vouch for that Novak can't have chicken in kibble and most wets (naturediet being the exception), goes right through, raw chicken is not a problem
