Question Pork Bones ?

hi just a quick question i went to the butchers today for some bones and he said he only had pork bones and he said they were no good for dogs as they splinter so he wouldnt give them to me but promised me some beef bones on friday however when i went to collect some bones from another butcher i got the bags home and i think they are all pork lots of meat on them and even a couple of what i think are either shoulder or breast plates about as big as a mans hand so what i want to know is am i ok to give these to my staffy or is the butcher correct in thinking i cant give pork bones to dogs ?

Re: Pork Bones ?

Just give them as they are

But if your dog has never had pork or pork bones before dont overdo it at first, as pork is a bit richer than other meats and can give doggies loose poops, lol!

You could always let the dog chomp away for so long then remove the bone, pop it in a carrier bag and stick it in the freezer for the next day

Raw pork bones are fine.

Depending on your dog's size and experience with bones you might want to: monitor progress and restrict access to the "long bones", these are the leg load bearing bones which are too thick/solid for some dogs.

My 45Kg rottie cross can reduce a pig femur down to a small solid bone lump in 15 minutes or so. I would not feed beef long bones - they are just too solid.

There is much myth about "splintering" and old-wives tales about do not feed raw chicken bones etc etc, it is all tosh !

Raw bones of suitable size for your dog is fine whether it is from a chicken, pig or fish.

Apply common sense to dorsal spikes from some fish.

Watch how your dog eats for more education.

Re: Pork Bones ?

My butcher once warned me not to feed pork but I ignored him as my lot have been eating it for ages now without any adverse effects.

I would go as far as to say pork bones do splinter, as do lamb bones but I think this is where experience matters. My dogs will crunch a bone and if it splinters, they will just get the marrow from it, they wont attempt to eat large slivers of splintered bone.

I dont like beef bones personally, I find them too dense, even ribs.

Yes in some parts of the world the pork can contain a harmful organism, but it is late and I can't remember for the life of me what it is called But a month in the freezer should kill it off and be fine to feed raw
