My pup stinks!

Hi all.
My pup Dex is on Eukunuba puppy and all is well with the food apart from him producing god awful farts, most of which are in the evening. (I'm getting gassed now!)

I have read the dry food sticky and it was very helpful but I'm confused as to why Eukunuba is on the red list??

I'm thinking of changing Dex onto either Skinners or Arden Grange next week. But if it's the protein that is making him stink so much then he is not gonna be any better on Arden surely???

Cheers

Hi Butchcass, I did reply to your question about Eukanuba on the Dry Food Index. Will copy it over here incase you've missed it -

My 15 month old pup Dex is on Eukunuba, which, I thought was a good food but you have it in the red section, can I ask why??
It has meat as the first ingredient and a good protein content. He is doing OK on it, although his farts STINK!! I have put that down to the protein content??
I want to feed him a raw diet, but my wife is having none of it and seen as it is her who is at home with the family it seems I am over ruled!
I was also thinking of going onto Arden Grange to see if it helped his wind.

Cheers
Adam

Although Eukanuba has meat as the first ingredient, the second and third ingredients are wheat and maize. These are both very low quality fillers and completely indigestible for dogs – they have no use for them at all, so they just simply come out the other end! They are also well known for causing skin allergies and digestive sensitivities. Eukanuba also contains ‘EC permitted antioxidants’ which may include BHA and BHT – known carcinogenic (cancer causing) additives. The company who make Eukanuba also tests on animals.

What a shame your wife is against a raw diet It really is the best way to feed a dog IMO – but! I do understand it’s not for everyone.

Arden Grange is a MUCH better food than Eukanuba. However, if you could stretch to one of the ‘green’ listed foods, that’d be a brilliant move. You may find your pups wind is caused my cereals in the food, in which case, a grain free food (one that doesn’t contain any rice, wheat, maize/corn, oats, barley etc) might help - Arden Grange Sensitive ocean white fish & potato is a grain free food since you're interested in AG

Re: My pup stinks!

with the massively overinflated price you are paying for the eukunuba if I were you I would swap over to one of the green foods, acana and fish4dogs being my two faves, the two foods i had my dogs on before i switched to raw

Re: My pup stinks!

I'll have a butchers at where I can get a good deal on some Arden now.

This might sound like a really daft question but here goes anyway:

Fishfordogs/pups:
This is one of my top choices but the wifey HATES! fish. Does the food smell strongly of fish or is it just like any other dry food??

Yes, it smells very strongly of fish. But, if the bag is kept in an airtight container, and the dog eats the food as soon as it goes in the bowl, then the smell shouldn't be too much of a problem. Or just tell the missus to go in the front room when the dog is being fed!

Re: My pup stinks!

Christ! Fish4dogs certainly isn't cheap! £60 for 12Kg!!
Some good deals on Arden but not for the puppy food
Also looking at Skinners as I've heard it's very good but it's 40% rice so why then is it a yellow? Agrhhhhh!
I wish she would just let me feed him raw!

Re: My pup stinks!

skinners is a good Budget food, that is why it is yellow

it doesnt contain hamful preservatives, no colourants either
there havent hidden loads of different kinds of grains in there

being hypoallergenic it is free from wheat gluten, maize gluten, barley gluten, soya and dairy stuff

Obv sixstar made the list so I cannot speak for her , but that is my opinion. I also feel that it is a food fairly and honestly priced and marketed.
SixStar likes this.

Re: My pup stinks!

Puppies do not need puppy food - it's a money making gimmick. My raw fed pups eat no differently to my raw fed adults

Skinners field & trial duck or salmon is a reasonable food - not brilliant, but not awful either. It's 40% rice yes, but is hypoallergenic, has no wheat or maize, additives, nasty colourings etc - and rice is the best of a bad bunch when it comes to grain.

What is your budget? Vitalin Maintenance is a good budget cereal free chicken & potato food - £33 for 15kg.
