Costs of prescription medicines.

Hi all,
Our little 7 month old shih tzu (Teddy) has been diagnosed with Helicobacter, I have just been to our vets clinic to collect his medication:
60 x 250mg Noroclav tablets plus 60 x Stomorgyl tablets have come to £166. I have to go back on Monday to collect 60 x Losec tablets at £144.
We are shocked at the prices of this medication simply because this is a first for us and because of our NHS we are somewhat protected from the harsh realities of health costs. My question is 'has anyone out there had to buy these tablets for their pets and if so, were the costs similar? - Also, are they reliably available elsewhere at less cost, for the real thing. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks. Jim.

Couldn't find Losec.

Wow, that is really expensive. It would be worth you trying a company like Viovet and getting their prices. You would need a prescription from your vet but a lot of drugs are about half the price.

Re: Costs of prescription medicines.

I think your vet is ripping you off big time. Noroclav is co-amoxiclav 250mg and is available from a chemist on production of a vets presciption for much less than your vet is charging you. Similarly Losec is Omeprazole 20mg and is also available at a much lower price than that. It would certainly be worth ringing up your local pharmacy and asking them how much it would cost you for a vet's prescription for 60 co-amoxiclav 250mg and 60 Omeprazole 20mg - I think you will be totally surprised at how cheap it is and then you will be able to ask your vet for a prescription rather than him dispensing the drugs himself. Legally, he cannot refuse to do this. Stomorgyl, unfortunately, has no human equivalent so you would have to buy online with your vet prescription. But as this link shows, even if your dog needed the highest strength, it is still only £31.35 for 50 tablets.

Stomorgyl-Hyperdrug

Re: Costs of prescription medicines.

Thank you all so much for your invaluable information, we have to collect the Losec from the vet on Monday so I will ask the receptionist exactly how much a prescription will cost as the medications are far cheaper over the internet. On the subect of insurance I think that we missed the boat there as Teds period of no cover started 14/12/2011 and we took him to the vet on the 12/12/2011 - s**'s law !! ( we are with Animal Friends )
Thanks all, Jim.

The costs of medicines is the part I hate most about taking care of dogs.

Hi Holyshihtzu,
I think that if I was you then I would have your little one checked again, although Teddy is still being sick it is now only perhaps once every 2/3 days and slowly improving. We are at the stage now where we are thinking about decreasing the number of meals he has but increasing the amounts. At present we have gone from a tablespoon every 2 hours to two tablespoonfuls every two and a half to three hours and we feed it to him a little bit at a time in the palm of our hands - bit messy as he is ravenous but worth it as we do not want him to bolt it down in one go which he would!! Good luck, Jim

Re: Costs of prescription medicines.

hi janjim3
he is booked in tomorrow for a vitamin b12 injection, so when he is there I will ask again. we have been giving him little meals but often like the same as you 1 tablespoon the vet advised this morning and see how he does on that, he has stopped being sick and he has so much more energy and is coping on the drugs given.
we have been given royal canine gastrointestinal wet food and a hypoallergenic food to try him on, he has steroids and anti biotics in tablet form.
all of which will be decreased or increased depending on how well the drugs have helped him. i think slowly but surely he should be back to his old self once he gets better from medication, its just trying to get the actually medication down him is stressful as we literally have to pin him down which i think is stressing him out too much, just don't know how else to get them down him without him being too clever to spit them back out again, this is putting a strain on me and my mums relationship and i don't want anything bad to happen.
thinking of getting these treats called pill pockets and see if that works

many thanks from Holyshihtzu

Re: Costs of prescription medicines.

janjim3 and holyshihtzu,
sorry to hijack the thread, but can I ask what is wrong with your dogs?
As molly has been to the vets a few days ago with sickness, which I see your dogs are suffering with...
The vets said they couldnt find anything wrong with her, so they just gave me some special food to feed her for a few days, but this seems to have given her runny poos...
