Re: Costs of prescription medicines.

Hi

I am not from England but …
I think as well your vet taking a bit much of you. If you get a prescription you can buy the medication somewhere else. Some times the vet will charge you for writing out a prescription but it cant be allot. Hope your Teddy is getting better soon.

It would certainly be worth ringing up your local pharmacy and asking them how much it would cost you for a vet's prescription for 60 co-amoxiclav 250mg and 60 Omeprazole 20mg - I think you will be totally surprised at how cheap it is and then you will be able to ask your vet for a prescription rather than him dispensing the drugs himself. Legally, he cannot refuse to do this. Stomorgyl, unfortunately, has no human equivalent so you would have to buy online with your vet prescription. But as this link shows, even if your dog needed the highest strength, it is still only £31.35 for 50 tablets.

Stomorgyl-Hyperdrug
Good advice

My Ted was on a "human" drug for some time, I work for a chemist and asked about it, got a prescription from vet and got the drugs at a quarter of the price

Re: Costs of prescription medicines.

One other thing - if it's a chronic condition then you can ask your vet for a six month prescription. That way you don't have to go back to them every month for a new prescription (for which he will charge you). The disadvantage is that you have to buy 6 months worth of meds at a time. They are limited to 6 months though - after that the vet has to see the animal again.

We are shocked at the prices of this medication simply because this is a first for us and because of our NHS we are somewhat protected from the harsh realities of health costs. My question is 'has anyone out there had to buy these tablets for their pets and if so, were the costs similar? - Also, are they reliably available elsewhere at less cost, for the real thing. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks. Jim.
Joshua's medicine was £140 for two tablets from the vet, £55 from Viovet. The vet has to write you a prescription, by law he can't refuse, for which he will charge. Mine charged £11, then you scan it in and email it to them, or send it through the post. They deliver really quickly as well.
