My Beagle has a smelly bum!

Hi

Have just registered with this site as I'm looking for some advice please. I have a 3 year old male Beagle called Bob. Nearly every week we get a fishy smell from his bottom. He has had his anal glands expressed about 6 times now. The last time I took him the vet said that they dont like to express them too often as it can lead to abcesses (not sure if that's the right spelling) and cancer. Each time he has had this done they are very compacted. He suggested adding bran to his food which I have been doing for a couple of months now. Another suggestion from someone else said to give him raw chicken wings which I was reluctant to do because of the bones. I did try this but it hasnt stopped the whiff. He is on James Wellbeloved turkey and rice. Our other dog Ollie is a 4 year old mixed breed she occasionally has the problem but probably only every 2 months or so. Is there anything else I could add to his diet to help the glands empty when he poos as I've been told its because his stools are too soft.
Any suggestion would be gratefully received
Many thanks
Clare

Re: My Beagle has a smelly bum!

Are his poos soft? I have had problems with mine with that, and the best food I have found is Royal Canin. Mine are on Maxi light. I know a lot of people on here do not like Royal Canin, but whatever is in it, their waste has never been more solid and their coats shine.

I have never heard of a fishy smell, but my little mongrel used to have trouble with his anal glands, a lot, but I can't remember whether they stunk because it was a long time ago. And he wouldn't touch dog food of any description!

Re: My Beagle has a smelly bum!

Hi there, I am new to this tonight and not sure how the posting works. I have Beagle to, he is 5 years old and he too suffers from anal gland problems. I have done so much research on this subject. I have just ordered some profibre which cost £9.50 for a 800g pot. I have looked into the skinners dog food range but have found the fibre to be 3.5% fibre which I think is really low, not sure?? Can anyone suggest a high fibre food please.

Mant thanks
