Nikita's coat, plus eggs & cheese

I've been giving Nikita a whole raw egg about 3 times a week, as it is...shell and everything, she loves them especially as she gets to play at rolling them around before eating it ...but I have a couple of question and hoping someone in the know can answer them.

Firstly, I have noticed since she started having them her coat has gone really soft, in fact it feels like incredibly soft fuzz...just like one of those lovely soft toys you pick up in a shop that feels so soft and too soft to be real, I have read/heard loads of times that eggs are good for a dog's coat but didn't know if it was just a myth or not....could Nikita's soft fuzziness be down to the eggs, or just a coincidence and simply a phase her coat texture is going through as she grows?

Secondly, while I was looking online at this subject I came across the following :

"Human beauty guides have long recommended raw eggs for shiny hair. Many pet owners, especially those of show dogs, also want to enhance their pets' appearances. Raw eggs can improve a dog's coat, but owners must take precautions.

Raw egg yolk provides biotin, protein, and many vitamins and minerals that contribute to a healthy dog, and will manifest as a lustrous coat. But according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, raw egg whites contain avidin, which damages a dog's metabolism and creates a biotin deficiency. Owners should discard the white if feeding a dog raw eggs.

Cooked eggs are nutritionally superior to raw eggs, according to fitness expert Dave Draper. Cooking increases an egg's protein bioavailability. As protein is essential for hair growth, a cooked egg might benefit a dog's coat more than a raw egg."

Does anybody know anything about avidin being linked to biotin deficiency and would it be better for her to cook the egg first? (I'm a bit worried now )

Also just one other thing, when I took Nikita to the vets for her 2nd vaccination he said to give her cheese triangles a few times a week (you know those Laughing Cow triangles), anyway he didn't say why so I just wondered if anyone has heard about these being good for dogs and what the reason might be?

My vet friend (who feeds her dogs Prey-mode BARF) tells me that lightly cooking an egg first is best.

Soft scramble.

Re: Nikita's coat, plus eggs & cheese

I give whole raw eggs about twice a week - never crossed my mind to cook them (I don't cook anything else I give them ).

Not sure about the logic behind your vet suggesting cheese triangles? Cheese, like mild cheddar rather than processed slices/triangles, is fine for a training treat but doesn't really have any nutritional benefit to the dog. Unless he is suggesting giving them for calcium, but if you are feeding a complete balanced diet then she shouldn't need extra calcium from any other source. Very strange!

Re: Nikita's coat, plus eggs & cheese

I give my 2 whole raw eggs as an occasional treat

I give them in the garden so when the eggs crack there is no mess.

Although Zipper ans Lilly aren't the brightest so unless the eggs break against a stone for them I have to crack the eggs for them as they can't work out how to do it their selves

Thank you, I'll stop getting paranoid about it ...I have been giving Nikita an egg every other day for the last 10 days or so, is this a bit too often or doesn't it matter?

Yes, the cheese triangle thing did leave me a bit confused too I think our vet is a bit odd though and he is a cheese-eating surrender monkey after all (can I get away with saying that??...yeah course I can, Clarkson said it on national tv! )

We told him we are planning to start her on raw feeding and he was quite supportive about the whole thing but also said that the husky needs more fish than other breeds so I should make sure it is a big part of her diet...I'm totally new to raw feeding so not sure if this is true or not

Hmm I'd probably cut down a little on the eggs to be honest, 2 or 3 a week would be better.

@ the bold bit! Never heard anything like it! Granted I've never had a husky but I've fed raw for forty odd years now and never heard a mention of it! Maybe he means because she'll be a big-ish dog with a thick coat then she'll need lots of fish oil for her joints and coat? By all means include fish in her diet, but she won't need more than any other breed

Ok I'll cut down on the eggs a bit

I have no idea why he thinks that huskies need more fish than other breeds ...anyway I'll continue doing as I'm am by following the sticky info and advice from everyone here, you've been doing it for years so that's good enough for me
