Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

Hi all,

My dog, Dexter (Staffy), has recently developed alot of sores on this body and having itchy paws. After blood tests at the vets it was found that he is alergic to Peanuts, Soya Bean, Corn, Wheat and Rice.

As you can imagine this limits us to the food we can get. We have been recommended Wafcol Salmon and Potato food for him.

Does anyone know of any other foods we could perhaps get to give him a bit of variety? Also places to buy this food as its quite expensive we want to get it as cheap as possible

Thanks for your help

Cheers
Kev

Here's a few for you to look into:

Arden Grange Sensitive (Ocean White Fish and Potato)
Wainwrights Salmon and Potato (Pets at Home)
Acana
Orijen
Wainwrights Turkey and Vegetable (Pets at Home)
Fish4Dogs
James Wellbeloved Turkey and Veg
James Wellbeloved Lamb and Veg
James Wellbeloved Fish and Veg

Naturediet is excellent and are wet trays, although they do have minimal rice content (5%).

If you do a "Google" for the Wafcol you should get prices on the net.

Re: Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your little dog.

Not sure how you feel about buying online but this fish and potato with allergyx would be another to consider Working Dog Food Adult Dog food | WorkingHPRs along with their duck and potato and salmon and potato. The prices are for 24/30k which works out more economical but you can get smaller bags. They guy is really helpful and I think will send you a bag and not ask for payment until you are sure it suits your dog. (dont quote me on that but by all means email/ring and have a chat) Delivery is quick.

If you try a P@H brand and still have problems, they will take it back and give you a full refund.

Hope you find something that helps

Re: Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

My bitch with a food allergy has been fed Arden Grange Ocean White Fish Sensitive for well over a year now and (fingers crossed) is doing extremely well.

Its not that cheap at about £42.00 per 15kg bag but a heck of a lot cheaper than Royal Canin Prescription Hypoallergenic which must be in the region of £75,00 per bag now, plus numerous trips to the vets which all add up.

HTH

Re: Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

Thanks for the links

I think im going to go try the wainwrights salmon and potato first to see how he gets on with it. Its local and i can get it straight away but if that fails im definately interested in that workingHPR link. The salmon and potato food contains maize so i think thats unsuitable but the duck and potato looks like it will be ok and would give him something different from fish all the time!

Glad i checked in on this website. Thanks again

Re: Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

It has to be said that if you are prepared to do some research raw feeding may be something to look into. If you want to start looking at it I would suggest starting with Raw Feeding: everything you need to know! Raw feeding does not need to be expensive and once started is actually very simple. I know we first looked at raw due to an allergy problem with one of our dogs. Now they are all fed it.

I feed Buster fish4dogs. He has some sort of food allergy (we think) and he has been doing well on it since changing to a hypoallergenic diet.

Raw is another option.

Re: Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

Oops sorry, I didnt check he salmon and potato in the link Just goes to show how wrong it is to presume!! I've used the duck and potato and can vouch for that having no cereal and going down v well.

Do bear the Fish and Potato with AllergyX in mind. Hopefully if wont come to that but it's made with hydrolysed meat and could be the answer if all else fails.

Just to add, I think the WW salmon and potato contains sorghum which is a cereal and barley. Barley I know doesnt usually cause problems, so probably the sorghum wont either. Check out their Advance Sensitive while you are there - dont think that's got any cereal but a bit more expensive.

Either way, you can wade your way thro P@H first and see how you go. Dont forget, if it doesnt suit you can take it back however much is used for exchange/refund

Hope it sorts the problem for you

Re: Dog Alergy - What food to buy?

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I went with the Wainwrights Salmon and Potato and fingers crossed there are no adverse effects. We have also picked up some packets of minced meat to give him a bit of variety.

The butcher has also given me a ton of bones which he loves

So far, only a few days in, he has stopped licking his paws all the time so i'm hopeful that this is the start of it being far more comfortable for him and that the scabby sores on his belly start going soon as well!
