Cocker Spaniel - walks and coughs

Hi all,

Had our cocker spaniel, Max for about 2 years now.

Over the past month or so we have noticed a couple of things about him.

Firstly he seems to have lost interest in going for walks - particularly with my wife, who keeps him on the lead when she takes him. Vet seemed to think he might be bored of going to the same places ???

The other thing is he's coughing, usually first thing in the morning, sounds like he's trying to cough something up but never does. He is a stick lover, wondered if maybe he's crucnhed one and it's got stuck somewhere.

Any ideas ??

Re: Cocker Spaniel - walks and coughs

Have you told your vet that he's coughing?

It could be some sort of upper respiratory tract infection, (kennel cough) which is making him feel a bit under the weather, hence not really enjoying his walks.

Not sure about the cough, but Henry is a working cocker and he's not really interested in road walks - much prefers off-lead romps around the woods and fields.

I would definitely be taking your dog to the Vet about his cough though - could well be a piece of stick stuck in there, which could be dangerous.

Re: Cocker Spaniel - walks and coughs

I'd take him to the vet about the cough.

Walking-wise, where does your wife walk him? Is it just road walks? Does she have him on a flexi lead or long line if she takes him to a field or park?

My cocker spaniel is 3 years old, and we have several walking places, however even just on road walks, he isn't bored as there is always new smells from other dogs. he loves his walks, and he doesn't go off lead. When we are on fields or in open spaces, he goes onto a flexi lead or long line.
