When can I change puppy's food?

Hello

I'm a first-time dog owner and I just brought home my first puppy on Sunday! Just wanted to get some opinions on when I can start to change his food from what the breeder was feeding him, to something else? I know I need to change him over gradually but don't want to start too soon if it'll give him an upset tummy, as obviously he has only been home for 3 days!

Thanks for reading

Re: When can I change puppy's food?

what food is it he is on?
if it is a decentish one I would keep him on it for at least two weeks to a month,
if it were a rubbish one I would be keen to change sooner than that a week to two weeks maybe.

Im changing my puppy from wainwrights to naturediet, just because it is a personal preference, I started the gradual switch over on Tuesday, three weeks after getting him. He is coping totally fine with the switch.
Although I know his breeders work hard to give them a cast iron stomach where they can, introducing them to lots of food early on. They raw feed themselves but obv know that not all their puppies owners will. So my lil guy is used to eating, cooked eggs, raw tripe, raw mince, wet foods, table scraps etc.
I will be switching him fully to raw (what the other three are on) when he starts to really tackle bones properly.

Re: When can I change puppy's food?

Thanks for the reply!

He is on Eukanuba at the mo and the breeder gave us a bag of it so we have plenty, but I'm not sure that it is that good of a food (from what I've read)? Was thinking about eventually going over to Fish 4 Dogs and seeing how he does on that, as it sounds like a decent food.

He does look a bit like a golden retriever actually, doesn't he!? But he's actually a crossbreed (cocker x min poodle)

Re: When can I change puppy's food?

Congrats on your new pup and welcome to the team
As for your pups diet, all breeders get Eukanuba free from Eukanuba on the hope the us the public buy their poor quality food at one of the highest premium prices....they must think we button up the back lol as for other brands there is abs loads of them but picking the best can be hard. I yous James Wellbeloved as its fantastic quality food and you can always find cracking deals on it online. So many times a year they give 3kg free (£9.99 or thereabouts worth FREE) and also special price bags from £47.99 down to £39.99 but a few good online companys will go even cheaper when on special. Personally i would choose James Wellbeloved but im sure many members will have their own views you can buy it on deals from directdogfood.co.uk, petplanet.co.uk, pet-supermarket.co.uk, petshopbowl.co.uk and many more go have a look

Also good luck with the hunt and hope you find one the suits your pup best

Re: When can I change puppy's food?

Thanks for the info

Didn't know breeders got Eukanuba for free! I suppose that's a similar kind of deal that vets get with Hills or Royal Canin, when they give out a bag of food when a puppy is brought in for vaccinations

So, do we reckon I can start introducing a new food maybe sometime next week then?
