Am I the only one with a dustbin for a dog?!

My GR pup is 6.5 months old and will eat ANYTHING she can get her little (well not so little really!) paws on! Seriously she will go for anything and is now tall enough to reach all the food surfaces and will move at the speed of light as soon as anyone's back is turned if there is food to be had.

Obviously I want to avoid this - she is never fed scraps and never has our food but if I'm making sandwiches for lunchboxes you would think I was hiding the most precious food ever from her - she goes mad for bread! If she does grab anything I remove it with a 'leave' command so she is never allowed to eat what she steals . The funny thing is that she has a very good wait for her own food and will not eat until told to but will bolt ours in a second if she thinks she can.

As she is our first dog I was just wondering if this is a GR thing, a puppy thing or whether I'm actually not feeding her enough She has 3/4 of a Wainwrights puppy tray in the morning and 3/4 at night and has hot dog or cheese pieces etc when training in the day. My brother asked me the other day if she was a bit on the skinny side and this has me wondering if she really is hungry or if she's just a porker in training

shes a golden retriever
and unfortunately if GR were to be believed they are CONSTANTlY starving and mummy never feeds them

only way we could say if shes on the skinny side is to have pics from the side and above

im sure she is fine but people are used to seeing fat dogs
better to be a bit under than over I say

Be careful with the Wainwrights tray feeding guide........ a lot of people have mentioned on here that they are extremely low and many have to feed quite a bit more than recommended. Henry is around 15kg and he has 1.5 trays per day but he's an adult dog so a pup would need more anyway. If you do a search for "Wainwrights RDA" on here, you may find the posts. If she's looking a bit "ribby" I would up the Wainwrights food or if you don't want to do this, possibly add a bit of dry into it. Understand if you want to feed all wet, though. I prefer a mainly wet diet and just use a bit of kibble now.

If there is something wrong with your dog my three have the same problem , I turn around and all and everything would be gone even if they have just been fed. I can't leave anything on the surfaces , I have even had to cover the fruit bowl !!!!! Hope this makes you feel better

Re: Am I the only one with a dustbin for a dog?!

I think it lessens with age....as well as training of course for it not to be acceptable.

Mine would eat for Britain too given the chance and his Mum apparently once ate a 15kg sack of food in a one-er!!!!

You do sometimes think to yourself am I feeding enough, but no, don't worry they'll always be after more anyway if you have a foodie dog and mine will have a sneaky counter surf if he thinks there's something within easy reach!

So a few months down the line I've found it's lessened with there being no opportunities for him to do it....so he's kind of given up

It sure does

I had heard about the Wainwrights being a little on the light side with their suggestions but I'm sure she would quite happily eat however many trays I put down for her

Re: Am I the only one with a dustbin for a dog?!

one of my collies is the same - we have a gate across the kitchen but if you leave it open just a little he has his nose in it, has opened it, ate the cats food and started on the bin before you even realise it. We have just got used to it, if we have left the gate open its our fault for doing so.

Re: Am I the only one with a dustbin for a dog?!

Nope; Kilo would eat me if I fell into his bowl I think, the bin has a lid that locks and food cannot be left on counters at any time unless the pet gate to the kitchen is shut .
