Bailey Bichon is on a distinguished road
12 week old bichon unwell :(

Hi all. Just looking for a few words of encouragement. Bailey had blood in his poo yesterday so we phoned the vet and got an appointment for today. He is fully vaccinated had worming and flea treatment etc. the vets have sent off his sample and given him antibiotics with no idea what it may be.
So I'm £113 lighter and still no idea what's wrong with our pup.

It could be many things, but the vet is doing the right thing. Did he say how long it would be to get the results back?

Re: 12 week old bichon unwell :(

Probably about 10 days he said. We thought maybe he was constipated and was straining as the blood only comes at the end of the poo but the vet felt his gut and his poo and said his gut is empty and his poo is soft. :s
I really hope it's nothing serious.

Were his poos normal colour? Did the vet take his temperature and check his heart rate? If that is all normal, I doubt you have too much to worry about, but I am not a vet. Ten days is rather a long time to wait, so I feel for you.

It could be a bout of colitis, you tend to get soft poops, sometimes really quite bad diarrhoea and often there is muscos (a clear jelly like substance) and flecks of blood too, they often do strain as well to go. Collitis is basically inflamation of the bowel its irritated. Usually some meds ie antibiotics and a resting diet like chicken boiled grilled no skin and plain white boiled rice, or boilled white fish and rice or even scrambled egg plain and rice for a few days do the trick. Sometimes if the diarrhoea is quite bad too they give protexin prokolin which is all natural helps solidify the poo, calm down the lining and puts back the good gut bacteria.
Its not that unusual in pups or dogs really and usually is easily fixed.

I would imagine your vet is playing safe to rule out any causes that may need more treatment then antibiotics.
Pups can have protozoan parasites coccidia and Giardia, they can cause upset tums in pups again not that uncommon. Normal wormers dont do these, although Panacur paste does giardia, but you have to give a longer course then just for intestinal worms. Pups can also pick up Bacterial infections easy, he has given you no doubt a broad spectrum Anti biotic, but certain bacterial infections require specific antibiotics and also longer courses then the standard to eradicate them completely campylobacter is one, again pretty easily fixed but needs specific ABs. They will also make sure too there are no signs of worms just to make sure as worms in a pup can cause diarrhoea and upset tums.

Likely pup will be fine with what you have been given already, your vet is just being careful and making sure that things are ruled out and he is getting the right treatment. Did you just take in one faeces sample? They sometimes ask you to do a 3 day fecal sample, from 3 different poops on 3 consequetive days to make sure, as it can be that bit more through and less chance of missing things that way.

Wow thank you so much. You have eased my worries some what knowing it all can e common. He has had quite a lot of mucus in his poo. Just got asked to do the one sample. This is our first dog and it's such a shame. He is fine within himself, playfull, eating, drinking and my instinct tell me that if there was something major wrong he wouldn't want to do anything. Fingers crossed for the results soon and that they are clear.
Thanks again

If he is eating and drinking well, lively wants to play, bright and alert, then personally I wouldnt be panicking. Colitis isnt that uncommon, and you have a sensible vet whos ruling out all the most common things pups can have that may cause it too. You could try him on a littled boiled chicken or boiled white fish (careful of llittle bones) no skin and a little plain boiled rice for a day or too.
Thay usually helps it as well, its easilly digestible and easier on the gut.
It is a worry I know especially if a first dog. Im sure he will be fine though.
Keep us posted how he is going.

Pups btw are their own worse enemy some are worse then others granted but sometimes its because they have their mouths into everything picking up and eating any old bits and pieces that doenst always help either.
