Adding supplements?

Hi all,

We have recently changed Izzy onto Taste of the Wild dry food and she is loving it! When looking on the ingredients it doesn't seem to have glucosamine and chondroitin (sp?) in it which some other large breed foods do. Should I be adding this in? Can anyone recommend where to get this from?

Thanks!

Re: Adding supplements?

It's a matter of opinion I would think. Some would say dont add it unless you have a problem, others - prevention is better than cure.

Pooch and Mutt do a good joint supplement called Mobile Bones and a lot here use Yumove or feed salmon oil. I think Dorwest also do one.

I use a broad spec supplement that contain bits and bobs for joint health.

Re: Adding supplements?

We already add in some salmon oil. Is this enough?

I am hoping to start doing some agility training with her this year which would add extra stress on joints so maybe I should try some of the things you mentioned to try and counter this?

I keep seeing you recommend those mobile bones supplement.
Do you know how much of each ingredient a dog gets?

Doesn't seem to say on their site

A lot of the foods that have joint supplements added to their product as a "USP" do not have them in sufficient quantities to make any difference and it does not state their source, amount or quality.

If you wish to add supplements for joint health then look either for single supplements which have stated quantities and quality or a product which contains the particular ingredients you want without any extras you do NOT want or which may not suit.

I find it easier to tailor make my supplement "cocktail" so I can avoid just such an issue, for example I would not feed Mobile Bones myself.

So the ingredients you are looking for are:

Chondroitin (marine rather than bovine sourced)
Glucosamine (HCl rather than KCl)
MSM
Green Lipped Mussel Extract
Hylauronic Acid
Fish Body Oil + Vitamin E
Vitamin C
Rosehip extract
Curcumin (from Turmeric)
Bromelain
Ginger
Devils Claw
Cetyl-Myristoleate

to name but a few.......................

I'm not sure but will find out and let you know.

Pooch and Mutt have informed me that they dont give out the individual ingredients in their products. The formulations took a lot of time and money to develop and giving out this info would open them up to being copied.

Interesting post Smokeybear, as per usual. Just a quick query, wouldn't the rosehip extract be a good source of vitamin C?

Re: Adding supplements?

You can find the ingredients available in Yumove here:

Dog Health Problems – How our Joint Supplement Works - Lintbells

When it comes to joint products, you'll generally find the veterinary standard products will list their contents, whereas other manufacturers may not be so open.

We also offer sample packs to try first if you prefer. Just give us a call on 01462 790886 to request one.

Best wishes
