Feeding dogs

Is wet or dry food better for dogs? How often do you think dogs should be fed? Or does it depend on the age, breed and size of the dog?

Re: Feeding dogs

Having fed dry only and wet only, I prefer wet only. I think a good quality wet is better than a good quality dry. I feed Natures Harvest Duck & Tripe (two different varieties), which both have 78% meat content. Now, it would be very difficult to find a dry food with that amount of meat in it, especially once the food has been dried.

I think its best to feed adult dogs twice a day, because the meals are smaller and it means they don't have to wait 24 hours for their next meal. For larger dogs, they should definitely be fed at least twice a day, because they need small meals, otherwise large meals can cause bloat.

Young dogs/puppies should be fed between 3-4 times a day until they are about 8 months old (correct me if I'm wrong here ).

Re: Feeding dogs

Goes without saying I think raw is best - 2 meals daily.

Re: Feeding dogs

If it's good quality then it doesn't matter if it is wet or dry. I feed raw so dry/wet food are completely alien to me now.

Puppies up to 6 months should be fed 3-4 meals a day. Above 6 months 2-3 meals and then it is up to you (Thats how I did it anyway, it varies). Most people keep 2 meals as it reduces bloating.

Re: Feeding dogs

Why is it better? If it just provides them with the meat are they not missing anything from their diet? Sorry, I know nothing about feeding dogs, I've heard about raw feeding before I just don't understand it. Do the dogs just get raw meat instead of dog food?

Re: Feeding dogs

I prefer feeding raw, the dog gets everything it needs from a well balanced raw diet (muscle meat, organs and bones), and you can supplement with veggies and raw eggs etc

Dogs don't need the cereals and grains used to pack out processed dog foods, and whilst you can find decent ones that have very little of these, raw eliminates it completely It's crazy to get your head around at first but it soon makes sense.

Well because it's natural.. isn't a natural way of feeding better than processed stuff? And your lack of understanding and knowledge is why you asked the question right?

I'm another for feeding raw, and no it's not just meat instead of dog food, it's a diet of raw meat, bones and offal and to me is the most natural diet that we can provide them

Because raw meat is what dogs are designed to eat! It's what is natural for them

It's not just raw meat - mine have raw meat & fish along with offal, bones, eggs, fruits and vegetables, manuka honey, goats milk and live yoghurt - all natural, nothing processed, just good healthy grub which all together, provides a perfectly balanced diet!

There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way of feeding dogs - aslong as it's good quality food that is fed, be it kibble or wet food, or raw, then it doesn't really matter. But raw gets my vote everytime, I'd never feed anything else - IMHO, it's the absolute best for them - and you'll never see cleaner teeth than those of a raw fed dog!
