Pets At Home (Vet Approved) Feed (FrEsh Chicken vs Chicken Meal)

Our 4 mnth Lab Pup was gassy on WainWrights and we were advised to change the brand of food, so today we've bought the slightly more expensive Pets At Home (Vet Approved) Chicken Feed for pups (Large Breed)

Fresh Chicken (Min: 26%)

we'll see how she goes, as far as im aware its decent stuff, no preservatives or colorants - and no meat derivatives and cereals.

I was under the impression though that the food having chicken/fresh chicken (or any fresh meat) in is best and that chicken 'meal' or any meat 'meal' is next best, but having read about it it seems it is other way around? thing that confuses me is it seems to be cheaper for 'meal' stuff.

so, if chicken is 75% water (as I've just read) before its cooked does that mean her new food is really just about 7% chicken..? does the 26% mean 'before cooking' ..i dunno and find the whole thing confusing, if meal is better why does it seem to be cheaper, all the expensive stuff seems to have 'chicken' or 'fresh chicken'

on the bag it says TOTAL CHICKEN: MIN 26%

Sadly yes it does. Meal is better in dry food as it's meat after moisture removal. Fresh meat is always listed before moisture removal.

Sadly you've gone from a decent dry food to one with only 7% meat in.

It's cheaper because it doesn't look as good to the buying public, you see 'fresh chicken' you think, oh wow, it must be better than meal. And buy it. It's a common advertising trick sadly.

ANNOYED!!!

so do you think we should take it back and swap for a dif flavour of wainwrights?

it says on the PAH one that its TOTAL CHICKEN = MIN 26% so surely that means in the contents of the packet? how do we know that it hasnt got it in or has?

THANKS

It does have 26% chicken. They list the ingredients before its all cooked together in every food. So it had 26% fresh chicken in the ingredients. Packets don't need to state what's left after its all cooked.

I'd swap it for wainwrights or maybe fishmongers. Buy it will take a good while for has to settle down on a new food.

Re: Pets At Home (Vet Approved) Feed (FrEsh Chicken vs Chicken Meal)

at first we got the wainwrights salon & potato and she would leave some of it sometimes and vomited a few times after excitement and car travel (hadnt before) so got the WW Turkey & Rice and she loves it , clears bowl everytime but it made her gassy - although this was 5 days ago and last few days gas is not as bad so must be settling..

were gunna take it back now for WW, perhaps different flavour.

thanks for the heads up with that anyway...im glad im clear on it cos I couldnt remember which was which when we were down there and thought the 'MEAL' was the 'lesser' of the two.

heading down now

thanks

she wants to try her back on SALMON & POTATO cos has no rice/maize in but it does not say MEAL on the bag according to their website... does this mean its poor quality? - it says Salmon Protein 23% , yet the Turkey & Rice said 29% Turkey Meat Meal...

http://www.petsathome.com/shop/wainw...ato-15kg-12634

confused again!!

hehe

Have you considered trying wet food? I think its more easily digested (the good quality ones anyway), so she may cope better with it.

With tummy problems, its trial and error on which food is best for your dog.

I feed Natures Harvest Wet to my dog, and it's fantastic. He gets Duck or Tripe variety which contains 78% meat, and he loves it, and does really well on it.

Re: Pets At Home (Vet Approved) Feed (FrEsh Chicken vs Chicken Meal)

money is a problem here, i dunno how much wet food is, we have been serving her food wet anyway, softening it with warm water then draining it off so food is slightly warm and moist, we have with all her dry food because at first we thought thats what we were supposed to do.. she loves it like that, she is happy and her poo's are fine..its just occasional gas, its getting better though, i think she is just adjusting to it as we had no food to 'blend' it in over 4 days..

edit: her gas seemed worse when it was served dry

she wanted to try WW Salmon & Potato again..but it does not say "MEAL" - IT SAYS 23% Salmon Protein... Fish Meat Meal... so is this one to avoid? other meat WW products like Turkey & Rice say 29% Turkey Meal, sounds to me like the Salmon one is a cheap alternative using fish guts and masking it with 23% Salmon Proteins? dunnno - im jst pee'd off with it and weve just had a big fight about it lol

WW do a Turkey and Vegetable dry food, which has Turkey Meal and no rice, etc. Could be a better idea....... or maybe adding some of the WW wet trays to up the meat content. Have you actually changed the Advanced Nutrition food yet? The WW is better quality, imo.

It it is settling down then I wouldnt change it, she has only bee on it for 5 days, it will take a while for her ot settle down. If you change it its going to make it worse.
Wet food went straight through Monty, so I wouldnt reccomend it.
