Re: help please! retained testicle not found during op!!

My boy Kai went to be neutered and have his retained testicle removed too. (so both testicles were taken away) My vet said that in order to find the retained testicle they would follow the cord its attached to, no idea if that's true or if he was dimming it down for me to understand.

If there is a cord they follow to find the retained one and they get to the end and its not there then I guess its possible he was born with 1? though I have never heard of that myself.

Is it possible his previous owners had it removed?

Ive also heard that they can be difficult to find too and can sometimes be located in the adominal cavity, Im assuming your vet knows his stuff and would have done a thorough search, it can be quite complex an operation depending where the missing one is, and much more complicated then a normal castration.

The undescended testicle is usually under developed and doesnt work so again I suppose but dont know for sure, that it may be posible where they dont develope at all. There can be alsorts of anomalies like dogs being born with both female and male organs for example and internal organs on the outside, so in theory anything is possible I suppose. Cryprotchidism is the correct name for it, you maybe able to find out more if you use that to search and stick to the more verterinary scientific based sites to find out more information.
This is exactly what my vet told me after I collected my chap from his op (he had undescended testicle), luckily for him it was in his groin area so was found quickly.

To the OP, did your vet confirm that they had done a thorough search?

Hi, yes they did a thorough search, the vet followed the cord / tubes, both where they should be but only one testicle.

Re: help please! retained testicle not found during op!!

It is rare but sometimes a pup Is Monorchid, so only one testicle is ever there,
Rather than being uni-lateral crytorchid, meaning one is undescended.
try not to worry and keep us posted, my boy was the same only one there xxx

Monorchidism in Dogs - Page 1

Hopefully the above article will help explain the situation. I once had a cat with only one testicle and he was neutered and lived to a ripe old age with no health probs.

Lots of get well wishes from here and pics are a must on this forum you know, almost a law!
