Re: How much chocolate is dangerouos - useful information

It really makes me mad when I see people feeding their dog things that can harm them.

''Oh this one little bit wont hurt''... but its not just one little bit.. its many ''one little bits'' a day, a week.. it all adds up! I yelled at someone outside tesco oneday- I came out to find them feeding my pup a whole bar of dairy milk- not the 'personal size' one with like 7 squares.. it was a medium sized one! Luckily they had only given her a couple of squares but I was mad at them- a)you do not feed someone elses dog outside a shop, b) chocolate is bad for dogs.. ''oh but she looked hungry'' some ppl are odd.

I read somehere that chewing gum has something in it that is poisonous to dogs if they swallow it too.. and i know of a few ppl who do not bother when their dog scrapes it up off the street.

Bottom line is, my dog NEVER gets to eat anthing that isn't her own dinner, treats or my dinner leftovers that I KNOW are ok for dogs to eat- it isn't worth the risk... One moment of happiness for your dog munching chocolate... years of agony if its fatal and you lose him.

Some brands contain Xylitol (also found in smints) which I've heard is very toxic to dogs.

It's a lot more than just chocolate!

Apparently there's a whole load of things to look out for - check out this list at What not to feed your dog - dangerous foods in your house

It's not just chocolate. If you have a dog, don't use cocoa-shell mulch in the garden. It is palatable to dogs and contains the same toxin.

Totally agree..... I think that the problem with giving even a small quantity of chocolate is that it can give your dog the "taste" of it. Once tasted you may have a chocolate-holic dog.
