13 week old Jack Russell Terrier raw tripe?

Hi all,

we pick up our new puppy tomorrow, I called the breeder tonight to find out what he is fed so I can go shopping first thing, she feeds him raw tripe, it comes in frozen blocks and is defrosted in water.

I want to do what is best for him, can you help me with advice on best feeding for pups?

Is raw tripe safe for a young stomach, does he get all he needs from it?

thanks

Yes raw tripe is fine for a pup, but they can't just have a diet solely of that though.

No he doesnt get all he needs from raw tripe
It is good for him but needs to be fed along side a proper species appropriote diet.
Excellent advice on the above here
Raw Feeding: everything you need to know!

Alternatively you may decide to feed a high quality commercial diet
Below are two great resources on chooses what to feed in dry and wet catagories

Re: 13 week old Jack Russell Terrier raw tripe?

Although some may disagree, my personal opinion is avoid "puppy food" as I strongly believe it do be a gimick. If a decent food is good for a grown dog it will be good for a puppy. The difficulty is making sure you do pick a good food so if I were you I would look through the links babycham2002 mentioned.

As for tripe it's important that it is green tripe, not white you can buy I believe in supermarkets. White tripe has almost no nutritional value. Green tripe is far harder to come by though.

Re: 13 week old Jack Russell Terrier raw tripe?

Continuing with the green tripe (smelly but good for doggies) and building on raw feeding is really the best for your new pup.

Plenty to read on these pages about feeding raw chicken carcasses as your pup grows, start with bits you mash up (heavy cleaver is ideal) that are appropriate for your dog's teeth.

Our new four month GR was started on connective tissue and bits from the carcasses that we feed the older dogs from the day he joined us.

As he got older/bigger when he had the power to crack and crunch through the long bones of a chicken wing he learnt the new command word "crunchers" he would turn his head to one side and bite using his molars tearing bits off with pre-molars and incisors, using his teeth as nature intended.

Feeding raw bones will keep the dog's teeth clean.

Feeding raw oily fish will give him a brilliant coat. (yes bones and all - just remove any hard spines and digestive tracts - scales optional)

Re: 13 week old Jack Russell Terrier raw tripe?

Although not a pup, all our dogs love green tripe. We actually manage to get large strips as shown here:

Feeding it like this gives her teeth a clean and also she exercises almost her entire front body and head to tear it into pieces she can swallow. It may be we can get the large pieces more easily than you can in the UK. I do know it's not allowed actually in the butchers shop (he also owns the slaughterhouse) but we pick it up at the back delivery entrance to avoid it's possible contact with meat destined for human consumption.
