Re: Split Nail
If this is your first dealing with nail problems seek vet guidance but ask to be shown how to do it yourself.
Difficult to advise without a picture but from what you say it sounds like the nail is too long and has broken under stress. It would not happen to our dogs but if I were carrying out doggie first aid I would clip short and use super glue to hold the nail together while filing the edges - then monitor and re glue as the nail grows out. Super-glue is not waterproof. Too long..... ![]() Cut back in stages over a few weeks..... ![]() I find this style easiest to use..... ![]() ....but only get to use them on the pup or neighbours dogs who don't get enough outdoor excerise. Our dog's nails are a bit shorter than this. |

Re: Split Nail
Hi! Yes best to go to the vet as split claws are a nightmare....he may need to have the claw removed to avoid it splitting more, especially as it is hurting him.
As for cutting claws, its easy with the white claws ad you can see the pinkiness of the flesh inside, so you want to cut a little way away from that. With the dark claws its harder...as a general rule you just cut the part of the nail that is hollow...the very tip. Better to trim very small amounts regularly than risk cutting too close and injuring your dog! |
