Acting hungry all of the time?

Sabre is 12 and he has NEVER been a foody dog. Looks at his dinner and walks away, maybe goes back to it later, only treats he would eat were tripe sticks and munchy rolls, nothing else.

All of a sudden(the last couple of weeks) he has become the most scrounging, foody dog! He knows not to scrounge when we are eating but he has started watching everything we eat, jumps up when we go to take our plates out and is round our feet until the food either goes in his bowl or in the bin. He will eat virtually anything we have offered him.

He was slightly overdue for his wormer so I gave him that on Thursday, thinking it could well be that but he is still like it. How long does wormer take to work?

Any idea on why he could be like this all of a sudden?

Yeh, I thought of things like that but he had a pet MOT not long ago including bloods and it was just one day he decided he wanted everything and he hasnt stopped since!
He went totally off his food when mum was in hospital 3 weeks ago, couldnt tempt him with anything, not even cat food or chicken. Then 3 or 4 days after she got home he was like this!

Strange, hopefully he is just makeing up for lost time I would check with the vets that a thyroid test was included, Banjo just had a blood test to check kidneys ect for his meds & I dont think it was in his but it might have been

Re: Acting hungry all of the time?

You could also ask for a blood sugar test.

My dog was constantly scavenging and would eat just about anything (banana skins, orange peel, tissues, a sock...).

I thought she was just being greedy and it was only when she started collapsing that we discovered she actually had very low blood sugar. The constant eating was a desperate attempt to raise the blood sugar.

Hopefully it's just behavioural and related to your mum's stay in hospital but it might be worth talking to your vet about it and asking for the thyroid test and a blood sugar test - just to rule out anything more serious.

Re: Acting hungry all of the time?

Tummels become really greedy recently too...I'm putting it down to the quite sudden temp drop we had a few weeks back combined with this recent growth spurt and his hormones being a bit mad(he's 17 months old) as before the drop he liked food but wasn't overly desperate for it, now it's colder everything needs more energy for warmth/movement/repairs and growth than it does in hotter weather. I'd imagine older animals would need more as their body works slower and less efficiently than a younger dogs.
hazyreality and ameliajane like this.
