It went wrong

i tried feeding raw tonight I held the first chicken leg for buster and he ate beautifully mum then held a chicken leg for him but he grabbed it and swallowed it whole.

Will he be OK?

I've given up on feeding raw it was the most stressful 10 minutes

Will buster be ok after eating the whole thing?

Re: It went wrong

If he seems ok now, then yes, he should be absolutely fine, don't worry but do keep an eye on him for any discomfort etc. My big lads swallow chicken legs and wings near enough whole, but they're much bigger dogs than a Beagle.

Please don't give up on raw feeding though No harm done by the sounds of things!

Re: It went wrong

I am wondering the same right now... I know Taylor is fine, and she has swallowed big chunks of bone before BUT she is straining when she tries to 'go' and it's been over a day since she swallowed what was an enormous piece of bone for such a tiny pup (okay so it was the smaller half of a chicken wing, but it seems so big for her!!)

She did manage to go earlier and strained out quite a runny concoction which makes me think things must be fine, but after reading some other posts a while back about blockages leading to runny poo I am still unsure and confused so i will be following this post xxx

Oh, and I'm sure everything will be fine

Re: It went wrong

I seem to recall reading and contributing to threads about starting off on RAW where the most common introduction is chicken wings and encouraging or assisting the dog to break the longer bones then moving up to larger portions.

The dog will be fine, ideally by starting on smaller portions will allow the stomach and intestines to adjust to raw over a few days.

When a dog starts a new diet there can be diarrhoea, does not last long.

Still, it's easier to moan about what you see as a failure with a few short lines posted than spending a few hours reading and planning a good introduction.

Your choice.

Wow, uncalled for much? I think BM is just worried about her dog. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. Mads swallowed a chicken wing whole once, scared the life out of me - but she was fine just keep an eye on him, is all you can do for a minute xx

I know how you feel! Sherlock swallowed nearly a whole chicken wing the other day (he grabbed it off the poor cat ) and I was terrified. He is fine though

It should just get digested in the stomach as normal, you don't need to worry.

Re: It went wrong

Thanks guys, he seems absolutely fine today

I was really worried

Buster ate the whole thing, millie finished eating. Buster sniffed where millie had been eating and there was a full on fight I was really upset by that as millie had been much better around food. I am so new to this raw feeding and had avoided it due to millies problems around food. mum bought some cheap chicken pieces and I just thought it would be nice to try it.

In hindsight I suppose it was too soon and I was unprepared, luckily no harm done. I am sure I will try raw again but its difficult with a very food agressive dog and a very submissive one. It will just take a bit longer to introduce

Re: It went wrong

Raw is higher value, but there's no reason you can't peacefully feed lots of dogs, I do it regularly, you just need to ensure they are in numbers they are comfortable in, sometimes that's one! I'd stick to wings until their digestive system gears up properly, he may have coped ok with the leg, but you don't want to risk it, so I'd always suggest sticking to wings which are softer and easier for them to cope with.

Have you got suppliers for the other elements you want to include in their diet sorted out? Good luck, it can be daunting, but it's easy once you get into it
