Lumps - how often should these be checked?

Last year Toby developed several lumps all of which were tested & proved to be just fatty deposits.

We've just found another lump (which I'm hoping will be the same as the existing ones) so he will be going back to the vets next week for tests on the new one.

Just wanted to know that although we keep an eye on the existing lumps to make sure they don't get any bigger or cause him any pain do they need to be tested every so often by the vet? What would indicate that they had turned in to something more sinister?

I don't want to read anything on the internet about lumps as last time I did I convinced myself that Toby had cancer & was going to die when in fact he was fine, I was just panicking & assuming the worst

Re: Lumps - how often should these be checked?

My boy has lumps and my vet isn't at all concerned unless more appear or they start to grow a lot faster.
He does get checked every 3 months though because he visits for other treatment

Loads of dogs get them. Fidget had many from the age of about 6 (she lived to nearly 16). The vet would have a look now and again if I took her in for other things but not on a regular basis.

Thanks, as I say we keep an eye on them but I didn't know whether I should be getting them tested by the vet every year just to check.

Will book him in to get this new one checked, poor Toby he hates the vets

Re: Lumps - how often should these be checked?

Same here, i get them checked when i go to the vets or if i am worried, i check them everyday myself, cant help it, when i first discovered a lump, went racing to the vet, she could'nt even find it, because he is so hairy, had to put her fingers on it, end that was 16mnths ago, and still not that big, feel like big flat jelly tots, you can almost pick them up.
The other day i seen a dog i meet regularly,it came trotting up to me, and between her front legs you could see this lump on her outline, like a small tennis ball, asked what was wrong with her regarding the lump, and he hadnt even noticed iteek:it was his daughters dog, but he walks it every day, so when i met him next time he said they were aware of it and were keeping an eye on it but hadnt been to the vet in a while, 1 dog i really think should have a trip to the vet to have this lump checked!!!

Chances are it'll be nothing but best to check.
Let us know how it goes

Re: Lumps - how often should these be checked?

One of my dogs has had lumps a few years now, when feeling these between the finger and thumb it is obvious that they are not attached, My vet (way back they) said we would just keep an eye of then to see if they altered shape I guess! We had one checked un GA a year of so back as that seemed to be 'fixed' if you know what I mean - but it turned out to be just a fatty lump! Guess watching them, feeling them, and reporting any chang in size or appearence is all I would say.

Re: Lumps - how often should these be checked?

His existing lumps did seem 'fixed' & everything I read (imo) pointed to cancer I was distraught but luckily everything was ok. I was intears when the vet told me, that's why I'm not going to worry too much about the new one .... well, I'll try not to

Re: Lumps - how often should these be checked?

I think would get new ones checked out if they looked/ felt/ behaved differently as well?

Can lumps change into anything more sinister - I don't know much about them but fingers crossed the new one is just a nice and harmless fatty type lump (if tats the most harmless one)

Re: Lumps - how often should these be checked?

When he was in the rescue centre he had a massive deposit on his front leg that needed surgery. It was awful, I can't believe his previous home let it get that bad but ...

Maybe he is predisposed to these lumps but it does worry me
