Irratated Paw

Wilsons spent a few days licking his back paw(now pink) took him to vets and she said theres some skin irriation between pads

She said there are a lot of skin irrantants around at this time of year as we have had no frost...dunno if thats true or cobblers

Shes pescribed 10 days antibiotics....my concern is the last time he had antibiotics he lost control of his bowles and soiled himself on my carpet

Thank god for Vax's

Is there anything i can give him to put goodness back into his gut....ive got some kaogel....or is just yoghurt good enough ?

Another £80 spent at the vets.....

Re: Irratated Paw

You can get Pro Kaolin paste which a few on here use. Personally I wouldn't give mine natural liver yoghurt if they've not had it much before for fear that would be more likely to give them the runs.

Kaogel sounds similar to the stuff people on here use, anything Kaolin based is meant to help I think.

Kaogel is just Light Kaolin. Pro-texin Pro Kolin has got, Koalin, Pectin and a pro an pre biotic in it. Persoanally I like and pefer the Pro-texin, although Ive a friend who swears by the Kaogel. While he is on antibiotics its questionable how much benefit he will get from pro and pre biotics anyway, as ABs likely will reduce good bacteria as well as get rid of the bad, especially if you have been given a broad spectrum one like I suspect. Pro and pre biotics just help with the good gut bacteria a healthy digestion needs. Have you got the same antibiotics as you had last time? Certain ones can cause diarrhoea where other types may be OK. If they have given you the same ones and it happens again this time, tell them and see if they have anything different ABs wise next time he needs them.

If he starts to get loose then I would give him the Kaogel hopefully that will firm him up a bit. You can get irritants at certain types of year, like pollens grass, certain molds and spores and Funghi so that much is true or can be.
You can get harvest mites too, those can be seen as little orangeish/reddish dots, its only the larvae stage that causes itching, then then fall off after a few days, those you can see, bit late for Harvest mites perhaps but then again weather has been weirdly warm.

Camrosa Ointment might help his feet, as well as bing healing and soothing it also makes a barriernas it doesnt wash off in rain.
Camrosa - Dogs

Dermacton products are good to for general skin itchiness and irritation, shampoo bar, spray or cream
Dermacton - Skin Relief for Dogs with Itchy Skin

To be honest unless he has got a bacterial skin infection in his feet, either originally or secondary from the biting and nibbling ABs are likely to do squat anyway.

Re: Irratated Paw

10 days of antibiotics sound very dramatic for a minor irritated paw! Did the vet reckon it was infected then? I'd have liked to try hibiscrub and topical treatment first personally, but either way - yes, I'd certainly give a probiotic alongside the antibiotics. Could you get hold of some Pro Kolin paste? That'd be best because it soothes upset stomachs too. I'd personally only give live yoghurt if Wilson already has it regularly and is used to it, but if not, it may well upset his stomach further.

Re: Irratated Paw

SDH you know we are both Dermacton fans they also do an ultrasalve that would be good for sore paws...... I haven't tried it myself but if it's anything like their ear stuff then

I am also using at present for Montys ear Hatchwells ear, skin and Paw balm and finding that good too to soothe and stop itching etc....

Re: Irratated Paw

Just had a re-read of your post and realised its paw singular not Paws Plural.
If thats the case and its only one paw? find it odd if being a seasonal irritant.
Keep an eye on it grass seeds can be a problem, they can enter into the skin and only go one way inwards or upwards, as they are barbed and migrate.
Clasic entry is the skin inbetween the toes, and if you dont spot them they can dissapear alltogether so you cant see them or the entry point. Ones have migrated up a tendon and came out much further up. If its one paw only its not beyond the realms of possibility perhaps.

All Activia does as far as I know is promote good digestion, but as its not 'live' yoghurt I wouldn't think you're replacing any good bacteria that the anti b's could be killing off to be honest. Live greek yoghurt would but I would just be wary of giving too much as some dogs are a bit loose on dairy to start with, more so from cow as opposed to goat and I would worry of overloading him and making him more inclined to have an accident.

If you've got Kaogel I would try that, you never know he might just do fine anyway. I keep a tube of Pro Koalin/Texin stuff in the house in case its ever needed, can't even remember but I think kaolin is meant to line the stomach so helpful for anything that might irritate the stomach itself.

What antibiotics is he on HyperSpringer?

Re: Irratated Paw

I think these AB's are different than the last batch he had....these are Rilexine 300's and he has to have 1.5 pills x 2 for 10 days....
