Is there anything you can give for a bad tum?

My poor Roy has diarrhea today and being a shih tzu in long coat means its a bum wash in the sink everytime

I think its because he ate something from a bin bag a fox got into last night. I let the dogs out and didnt notice until one came inside with tissue in his mouth. Roys has a sensitive tum so i alreday have to watch what he has. He will get bland food later but is there something dogs can have like what humans can take?

Hes otherwise fine and hasnt been sick, hes just very whiney which he gets like when he isnt feeling feel great - the whole world has to know but he is a boy

If he is drinking ok I would fast him for a day (if he is an adult dog).

You should always have electrolytes in your First Aid Box, the ones specially for dogs, eg Lectade, you can buy them at the vets or on line they do not need a prescription.

If my dogs have the squits the first meal they get is a small tub of LIVE yoghurt with a banana in the processor with some slippery elm/tree bark powder.

The yoghurt replaces the good bacteria stripped from the gut by the diarrhoea, the banana is a prebiotic which has a syngergistic effect with the yoghurt and the tree bark powder soothes the gut.

I also keep probiotic capsules in my FA kit in case of the squits.

You can purchase the capsules and slippery elm food here.

Canine supplements - canine health - canine nutrition - canine digestive system - herbs for dogs - Hilton Herbs

I stay right away from chicken or rice.

Second what's been said.

Mine has a dose of Jnr Kaolin to firm things up a bit as well.

May be worth having a look at Bionic Biotics from Pooch and Mutt. Was a godsend for mine with her sensitive tum.

Re: Is there anything you can give for a bad tum?

Thank you very much for that, hes just turned one. He is drinking fine and i actually have live yoghurt in my fridge now. The only problem is if i fast him he over produces bile when hes hungry and is then sick alot. Its one of the problems ive had with him since he was a youngster. He was sick alot and had various tests to no avail and i kept getting told to fast him when he was sick which made him even more sick. He now has 4 weighed meals a day.

Re: Is there anything you can give for a bad tum?

Went down to the vets and they gave me Pro - Kolin and said to fast him but if he is sick or has a bad tum tommorrow i will have to bring him in. I feel really sorry for him at the moment as he just keeps crying to be picked up

Pro Kolin is really good, should sort him out. I always keep a tube in the house.

I would not worry too much at all.
Diarrhoea is the bodies natural way of elliminating any toxins.
As said earlier starve for 24 hrs then reintroduce a bland diet little and often 4 small meals is much better than 1-2 bigger ones.
Never worry unless they have vomiting too and even then only if its persistant ie not able to keep anything down over a 12 hr period.

Ive always found missing a meal or two then feeding chicken boiled or grilled no skin and white rice, or white fish cooked in the same way and white rice or even at a push plain scrambled egg and rice usually sorts it as its an easily digestible resting diet. Usually you see an improvement within 24/36 hours if not entirely back to normal. If there is continue to feed until motions are normal and maybe for an extra day or so just to make sure. A always keep in too Pro Texin Pro Kolin, all natural it helps form the motions, soothe the gut and sontains a pro and pre biotic to put back the good gut bacteria needed for a healthy digestion.. That together with the resting diet deffinately does the trick usually. Available from vets and pets at home too I think, but usually cheaper on line. www.vet-meic.com is where I get mine, although there are others.

If you see no improvement at all over 24/36 hours, or the diarrhoea is getting worse and especially if other symptoms start like vomitting, lethargy, uninterested in their surroundings, not interested in food, an more worryingly wont drink or losing fluid quicker then you can get fluids in, then always consult a vet. Especially in Puppies and Old dogs who may not be so resilient to illness, as a young/ fitter dog.
