Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

I never bashed them but I know it does come recommended
Be prepared that you may have to entice her to eat them at first. By peeling back skin or cutting into etc

Wishing you the best, very exciting times

Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

I tried for the first time last week took toodles the first time about 20 mins to eat the little wing, however when i tried the next day he went straight to chomping away, so reckon he liked them, still worry abit about the bones so watch him eat them and he seems to crunch them up.

The first one i bashed up but the 2nd time didn't bother and he seemed ok

Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

Im quite new to raw feeding (2 months), but here are a few tips from me.....

I didnt bash anything up for Chio, you know your dog so go with what you feel is best.

Ask millions of questions on here if you need to, brilliant advice always given.

Read the sticky on raw feeding, read it again and then read it again. Post another million questions on here. (The raw feeding diary for Lexi is good too)

Dont lose heart if it doesnt seem to be going as you planned, be prepared to worry even though you are sure you are doing the right thing, and post another million questions on here.

Simples.

Good luck with your amazing adventure.

Im not sure about how you go on about it 'treat wise' as a lot of peeps advise not giving raw and kibble within a certain time limit. Someone will be along to help soon.

Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

The bashing advice is just in case they swallow the bone whole, a dog with a digestive system used to raw would cope fine, but a dog with a digestive system used to kibble, may not. So I suggest to people to either bash up the bones so they can't swallow a large piece in their haste to eat it, or hold on to the end of it, which is easier with a pup than an adult dog

Plenty of people give their dogs just a few bones a week, to help keep their teeth clean and clear anal glands, and they seem to be fine. I wouldn't get too hung up on giving her them as an extra, although you may want to cut back her other portion sizes, if she's still on a mainly kibble diet.

Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

Our new pup has taken to raw well, he was started off on the smallest scraps fed alongside our three year old dog when being fed his chicken carcasses.

All part of the integration and training, 'Lion' learns that to get food he must be seated, jumping up and snapping means he does not get food. Also he sees how the older dogs behave around feeding times and joins in.

Our older dog also learns that this newbie is fed along side him and will not be going away - this might be worth it's own thread on integration.

At a bit over three months I gauged he was old enough to try a chicken wing, but held off for two more weeks has he couldn't crunch the wing's long bone. I used that as the test that he could break the bones and therefore was ready to eat the wing supervised. With the ribs that he was started on he would nibble he meat off with his front teeth. For the wing I hold at the wing tip and manoeuvre the bone towards his molars and say "Crunchers!" - it's early days but there is the association building that the word is connected with taking food in to the side of his mouth.

Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

You'll be surprised just how little it takes to fill them on raw - some nights Benny only has 2 chicken wings for tea.

Instead of giving it as a treat, why don't you give it as tea instead of kibble? That's what I started off doing before going over to completely raw.

Re: Ok, so I bought some chicken wings...

Try getting a whole chicken and cutting it up, you can get 4 quarters with some breast and then the carcass, I did that a few times to start with.
