Is it normal not to bark?

Not that I am complaining but my 18 month old Springer doesn't bark. In fact he has only barked twice since we got him at 12 weeks old.

His hearing is fine, his recall to the whistle is 95% perfect, he makes plenty of noise when playing, grumbles (talks) at me and my other dog barks at all the usual things, i guess I just assumed he'd pick it up but he never has.

Does anyone else have a dog that doesn't bark?

Re: Is it normal not to bark?

Be grateful some dogs just are more quiet by nature. My boy Todd doesn't bark, but my other two do.

when i got my dog at 8 months i was told that she had only ever barked one time in her previous home

she didnt bark for a while here either, but now she will bark at the door...if she feels like moving lol

to encourage her to bark at the door everytime she does it i give her lots of praise.

some dogs bark lots others just dont its nothing to be concerned about

Re: Is it normal not to bark?

some dogs are quiet by nature, my old dachshund sasha never barked (the one time she did bark she had a fright and that was when she was 12 weeks old) in the 19 years she lived, i thought stupidly all daxi's were like that then came dai 3 years ago he just loves to bark the only times he's really quiet is when he's eating or sleeping he even learned dinky to bark she was a sweet quiet little girl (the quietest of her litter) when we bought her at 13 weeks old until she met dai he's a bad influence on her and ellie may never shuts up.

Re: Is it normal not to bark?

Benny very rarely barks He only ever used to bark when someone came to the door which is very very rare as I live in the middle of nowhere! Apart from that the only time he barks is when he sees someone outside - which again is very rare!

He has now started barking when he decides we're not giving him enough attention though

Re: Is it normal not to bark?

Ferdie only barks when he wants something. For instance, if I leave the remains of the joint in microwave so they can't steal it, he will come along, bark once at me then take himself in the kitchen and look at the microwave. If he wants the toilet he will wait by the door if there is someone in the kitchen, if there isn't he will bark just once.

He never barks at the door or for anything else, unless he is talking to next door's dogs.

Joshua barked almost non-stop; drove me nuts at times. Diva will bark at the door and people walking past, and the telly.

Re: Is it normal not to bark?

Willow the golden retriever doesnt bark much at all, only occasionally when playing or if she she really wants what one of the others has got.
