puppy food

Im just wandering what the best food for my Yorkshire terrier cross chihauhau is?
The people I got her from told me they had been feeding her bakers complete. I started feeding her on this, but she wouldn't eat it. When I took her to the vets to register her and have her health check, I got a free pack of hills science plan puppys mini, and have been feeding her on this. She seems to like this. For the last two days, because I have a box of bakers and science plan, I have been mixing a little bit of bakers in with her normally science plan.
But i have been told by my mother in law that bakers is bad for dogs?
Im just wandering what is good food for puppys? Because science plan is quite exspensive. Obviously I dont mind spending money on food thats really good for her, but I dont want to spend all that money on science plan when their is better food out their.

She needs quite small food as she is only little and she cant eat big chunks, so I need food with little chunks.
Thanks

Re: puppy food

Hi - I definitely agree that Bakers is not a good choice. I think you could do a lot better for your money than Hills as well. Have a read of the Dry and Wet Food stickies at the top of this section. To summarise, Burns, Arden Grange, Fish4Dogs, Orijen, James Wellbeloved are all good dry foods. Good wet foods include Naturediet, Natures Harvest, Natures Menu or Wainwrights wet trays.

Re: puppy food

Bakers is awful, so please do take your time to have a read about other complete foods; I don't think there's much need for life stage variety foods personally, but would suggest soaking her food for her if it would help her cope with kibble a little better. You could also look at some of the wet foods, like nature diet, which seem to be quite popular

Re: puppy food

Have you had a read of these two first

The Wet Dog Food Index
The Dry Dog Food Index

They are very informative and will give you an idea of excellant and poor dog food. I was in the same situation about 3 weeks ago when we got Apple (now 10 weeks tomorrow Shih Tzu cross). The breeder told us she was on Butchers Puppy food and she had a lot of loose stools. After a week and a bit, when I felt she was in essence a very healthy puppy, but just had loose stools I decided to gradually change her food over.

After reading the above links and looking around shops and online, I've gone for Wainwrights Puppy Trays. Apple is very settle on them and the loose stools have gone.

I hope this helps you, Apples Mam x

Re: puppy food

I would recommend th fsh4dogs small bite puppy food. It's grain free and high fish content. Excellent for skin + coat and brain health

You can get it cheaper than the Fish4Dogs website btw, have a look around online.
