Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

My 10 week old puppy has had diarrhoea and we can't get him to the vet at the moment. I rang the breeder and she suggested giving him his worming paste (panacur) for 5 days (rather than the 3 days to treat worms) as it is also used to treat mild tummy bugs. Has anybody else heard of this as it doesn't mention it in the medicine leaflet?

Thanks)

Re: Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

No never heard that before, infact one of the side effects can be loose stools, was the breeder a reputable one?

prokaolin is excellent for the gut so long as the upset is not caused by anything serious...and as puppy is so young i would get her seen by a vet if i were you, diahorrea can be caused by all sorts of nasties or it can be something simple like diet?

what are you feeding your puppy?

Re: Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

She has been breeding pedigrees for many years so she seems reputable. We have just finished a course of wormer and hes been wormed twice since we got him 2 weeks ago.

He was on wainwrights puppy tray but at the moment he is having just boiled chicken to see if it helps his tummy. He was having rice but it just went through him. I should say the strange thing is is that he only goes for a poo once a day and it is runny. It's not like the food goes straight through him. He just doesnt do normal poos.

We can't get an appointment until next week and the vet said as puppy is drinking and still very energetic, hungry etc he'll be fine for a few more days.

Re: Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

if hes fine in himself and you cant get him to a vet yet, then i would give him some natural pro-biotic yoghurt then, i dont think wainrights is a bad food? but im sure someone else will correct me if im wrong lol

is your puppy a Cavalier King Charles(im going on the CKC in your user name lol)? if he is and the breeder was a good one, then they will have tested the sire and dam for all the serious genetic conditions this breed is prone to?

Re: Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

My Alfie has been prescribed it and used it when in a sample it was found he had the tummy bug giardia.

This bug is very hard to find and sometimes people and vets will recommend to use it in case a dog has giardia as it very rarely shows up in stool samples.

Hope this helps.

Re: Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

Thanks for all replies.

He is a cavalier king Charles. I'm not sure if his parents were health screened but all 3 generations were KC registered so I assumed so?

I'm wondering if he has an intolerance to rice and/or chicken. Also maybe he keeps reinfecting himself with worms but also if it stress related like colitis maybe.

oh yes they do treat giardia with panacur....i would be seriously suspicious of this breeder Dexter ...it sounds to me as though they know what your puppy has and giardia is a nasty condition ocontracted from drinking dirty water and often seen in dogs and puppies bred by bad breeders ....

you really need to get a stool sample to the vet to test for the parasite.

no unfortunately being kc registered dosent mean the dogs will have been screened, and cavs should be MRI tested for syringomyelia, heart tested for MVD plus various other tests im afraid.

if hes been wormed properly since he was born he wont have a problem with worms...did the breeder give you the info on the dates he was wormed and the dates you need to worm him?

Re: Panacur paste to cure mild tummy upset?

Yes she gave me worming dates and panacur to take home. I also phoned her yesterday to ask for advice and she is sending me a new tube of panacur in the post.

We thought he had Gardia on the second day we had him because I caught him drinking stagnant rain water in a pot in the garden. I didn't know it was there until it was too late. He isn't showing any other symptoms at all and when we bought him home he was pooin normally. This all started a couple of days afterwards.

This is what happened with Alfie, fine for 2 days after we got him them running toilet.

The vet said he may of had it since we got him and it didn't show in the first tests as camplylobactor did show up and he was treated for this.

I don't want to tell you what to do as I am no vet but take him and get a stool sample done but I would treat with the panacur anyway even if it doesn't show up on tests. if you google it you will see how hard it is to catch in a test and i don't want your poor pup to have as bad a tummy as my alfie has had.
