wet food plus raw

Hi all,

I've been reading through the raw thread and just have a quick question about mixing tinned wet food with raw. I don't mean mixing in the same meal, but say one meal of wet and an evening meal of raw.

Is that inadvisable because of different digestion times or would it be ok? The wet food will probably be rocco, which is only meat, no veg or rice.

Just as a quick explanation - we only have a couple of freezer shelves on top of a fridge, so I can't see how we could move onto wholly raw. If possible, I'm thinking of feeding mainly wet, but adding a few raw meals a week in, probably of complete frozen minces (eg. Rabbit Pet Meat) or chicken wings (i'd hold them so that he doesn't swallow them whole).

Any thoughts on this? I'm a veggie and have never had anything to do with raw meat and I'm just really not keen on the whole thing, but the more I read the more I have to admit that raw seems to be the way to go

Firstly - I'm not a veggie, nor am I good with meat - it has took me a few months to be able to walk into the butchers and stare at the meat without gagging.. (I only eat battered/breadcrumbed meat - very healthy I know) You do get used to it! I promise.

Secondly - I think you'd get away with feeding one meal of raw and one of wet but they'd have to be like 6+ hours apart (I think).

Thirdly - minces are fine - but you really want to mix in some RMBs and maybe some offal.. If you feel comfortable starting with minces first - then go for it..

Good luck..

I am no expert as I have only being feeding raw for 10.5 years but my views are as follows:

You can mix raw and wet diets together no problem, there is no scientific evidence of differrent digestion times, consequences etc and thousands of people do it all the tiime.

You can also feed one meal raw and one meal commercial, there is no need again to have any specific timie lapse for example many puppy owners feed 2 meals of raw and 2 meals of commercial per day.

There is no proven need for carbohydrates in a dog's diet so rice is not an issue.

I am unfamilar with ROCCO food so cannot comment.

I prefer to feed vegetables and fruits for their phytonutrients, but many people prefer not to.

What wet are you feeding, wet food often contains very little nutrients etc.

You could also look into wainwrights at pets at home as they do "pates".

Have a look at Products and Prices as they ahve the minces all ready made up and if you can afford it Darlings do a great meal plan. My friend feeds her cocker for about £28 a month with them and all the dinners are pre made. Literally defrost, in bowl, feed. Not much handling etc

Thanks toffee - for his wet food I've just taken him off Nature Diet pate as his stools were too sloppy and moved him onto Rocco Classic Great Deals on Rocco Dog Food at Zooplus: Rocco Classic 6 x 400 g
as this food looks very good to me. What do you think?

That's really interesting about the minces from Darlings (Honeys) and your friend who feeds her spaniel solely on these. I'm going to give the company a ring today to find out more. I think freezer capacity is the problem though, and as we live in a v small rented flat there's nothing I can do about that unless I can persuade a friend to help me out!

Thanks for your help!

hello again,

i've just received a quote from Darlings (now Honey's) and it would be £57 a month to feed Sherlock from them. Their info was great and they seem like a really good company, but this is just not affordable for me at the moment. I'm going to look at the other company you suggested (raw to go), although it is slightly different, as their minces don't seem to include the 30% veg that Darlings do (which on further reading appears to be a good thing actually).

I'm really looking forward to getting all this sorted and feeling sure that Sherlock's getting the right diet. It is such a worry.

You don't have to have veg - my dogs get a carrot each week - and thats only because thats whats normally left over from the bunnies.. it's not an important thing and you can always buy it separately (5-7pm at supermarkets - prices are reduced ) Mine get a lot of mince, but they also get carcasses and whole rabbits and this month they have duck wings.. just depends what I think needs ordering.. etc..
