Raw Diet "Diet"

1 of my dogs has a ongoing problem with her weight, It seems to fluctuate no mater what I do. (I'm sure she puts on weight just by smelling food.)
anyway, I'm really close to getting her into her ideal weight range, after letting her pile on the pounds when I first switched to raw, but after a vet appointment today, she seems to be stuck at the same weight, about a 1.5kg over the top end of her ideal.
She gets between 1 and 1.5 hour exercise a day and is eating around 2% of her ideal weight in food a day.
I can't really give more exercise as she has a problem with her back leg, the vet isn't sure what's wrong yet but I know the excess weight isn't helping, so she is only allowed to go out for about 20 minutes at a time.
I saw a new vet at my surgery today and he recommended changing to a dry, diet food, which I'm not too keen on.

Can I feed her between 1 and 1.5% of her ideal weight in raw food without causing her problems??

Her recommended weight is around 12-15kg and she is just under 16.5.
I want her to be about 13kg and am feeding her to that weight.

Thanks

Re: Raw Diet "Diet"

I know of people who feed as little as 1% of ideal body weight and have no problems obviously it's not something you would want to do forever but once she is down to whatever weight you want, i would then feed 2% ish and see if she maintains that weight then

2% seems to maintain her weight so it would only be for a month of 2, just why she loses the weight.
Thanks

Probably a stupid question but, what about liver/kidney, ect?? Is that needed in relation to weight, or what they eat?

Re: Raw Diet "Diet"

Can I ask what exactly are you feeding her??

I would be cutting out the 'richer' meats like lamb, pork, rabbit and other gamey meats and feeding more chicken and tripe than anything else to see if that makes a diff before cutting down on actual amounts.

Does she get a large meaty bone?? If so, count that as a meal on the day she gets it and dont feed a meal as such - I do with my lot

I know its each to their own, but I wish folks wouldnt get so hung up on ratios and %'s!!!

Wolves dont work out their ratios now do they huh?? can you imagine Mr Wolf 'Ooh, havent had my daily ration of liver today, best go kill summat and eat its liver' LOL LOL!!

Feeding this way smakcs of people being still influenced by the way the manufacturers of Complete foods market their foods.

As long as you are feeding a reasonable variety in a 6-8 week cycle, dont worry!!

My 9 year old went in for a spay today - vet insisted on doing a blood test to test for kidney liver and thyroid function as she is an old girl telling me things could be happening due to age blah blah blag. Went to pick her up and vet told me she was utterly surprised to find Cleo has the healthy function of a dog 2-3 years old and she hasnt slowed up at all, which is apparently highly unusual, lol!

Now, I'd like to think that has summat to do with the raw diet - and I dont get hung up on ratios or %'s at all, and with those results, I cant be doing such a bad job huh??

For the last few months, since trying to lose weight, she has been mainly having chicken, turkey and fish.
Everything I give her get weighed and is counted as a meal, or part of it.
I've started feeding her from her kong so it lasts her longer, so hopefully she thinks she's getting more.
The only treats she gets is liver cake, but thats accounted for with her food too. We've just hit a wall and can't get over it.

Well have you ever thought, that maybe she's hit her ideal weight and you are getting just a little too stressed over it? I dont mean that to sound condescending either, just a thought.

I know my Cleo is classed as 'overweight ' for a rottie bitch, but to actually look at her, she isnt. She should 38kg according to charts and stuff, but actually she runs at 42kilos and is no way overweight.

Go by your dogs waistline - hows it loking?

Normally I don't worry, with my other dog I don't. But because everything I'm giving her atm is weighed to help her lose weight, I want to make sure she has enough
