Puppy diet problems....

We've had our cavalier spaniel for 2 weeks now and he is 10 weeks old. We've had nothing but problems from the start with him not eating hardly anything for the first week and then thought he was getting better as he started eating and all was well except from bouts of diarrhoea. Then one night he had terrible diarrhoea with mucus and blood in it. Half was normal poo and mucus and blood along side it. This happened on fireworks night and as he has had problems settling in I think he might be suffering with stress because it happened the next night too.

I read up on colitis and it does seem thats what he has. Due to stress and the huge living change then the fireworks. He is fine in himself and very energetic still and just lovely. He has been wormed twice since coming here due to his upset tummy and we have just finished a course of panacur.

Because of the diarrhoea I stopped feeding him for 12 hours and started introducing him plain rice in small quantities to see if can settle his tummy and then introduce our normal food (wainwrights puppy tray). Last night he did a normal poo which really pleased me as its one of the first he has had since he came here. There was grains of rice in the poo. Then earlier this morning he had lots of yellow diarrhoea with loads of grains of rice in it which has worried me. I am not sure if the grains are dead worms (they arent moving) from the panacur working or if he isnt digesting the rice? As I said his poo was normal last night and solid. Is it normal for rice to pass through the system like that?

Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Re: Puppy diet problems....

I would say yes about the rice, dogs cant digest it which might be causing his stomack upsets, what are you feeding?

However blood in poo I would go to your vets.

Out of interest what the parents health screened? Hips, eyes, digestive problems? There are a lot of issues that run in this breed, hopefully a person experienced in this breed will see this as I no their are some big issues that MUST be screened for when breeding.

Re: Puppy diet problems....

Nothing was said about health screening at the time but I'll dig out some paper work and see what I can find.

The rice is just plain boiled rice. I thought if it was that which unsettled him he would have had diarrhoea last night too as he had rice for 4 meals yesterday.

He also eats off the floor and I do wonder if that is what is upsetting him. He will go in the garden and chew branches and stones and all sorts.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Puppy diet problems....

Maybe just give pup some scrambled egg and cooked chicken for a few days and see if tummy settles, I really hope pups parents are health screened, I hate to say it but there are a lot of sick CKC spaniels out there due to rubbish breeding.

Re: Puppy diet problems....

Hello

Apple is 9 weeks old (shih tzu cross) and she was exactly the same when she came home with us. Frequent soft Stools, mucous and a tiny spot of blood. I rang my vet for advice and she said that as long as Apple was well (no vomiting, no high temperature or lethargy). Then she should be fine and the blood might be from straining to poo. I've had loads of good advice from this forum.

Apple seems to have settled, stools look normal and she is on the wainwright trays for puppies. Which seemed to have settled her stomach. I did try the rice and that seemed to be when things started to get better. I also feed her 4 times a day.

I guess some dogs just take a long time to settle and are very stressed at leaving their mum and litter mates.

However, if you think your pup is unwell in any other way, then I'd say give your vet a ring for some advice.
