Can you add veg to diet without affecting weight or other food amounts?

Am just wondering if you add veg to the diet would i have to cut down on other food? cos at the moment i'm cutting down Tammy's food a bit cos she seems to be podging up a bit lately
But i'd quite like to maybe add a bit of veg mush as a little extra for the mornings since they don't really have a proper breakfast
and also because it would make another easier way to get some things like ACV or any other little supplement type things into them.
It would only be like an ice cube amount each a day along with their sardine and mackeral cubes

I think what im trying to say in a nutshell is can i add veg without making them put on weight lol

I expect it is the mackeral and sardine cubes that is helping to put on the weight

You can add veggies but remember some will have "null points" and some are high in sugars such as carrots etc.

So make sure you rotate above and under ground veggies in order not to concentrate on those high in sugar.

Personally I dont think veggies hold anything for dogs. I am probably wrong but I am not sure dogs can even absorb sugars, nutrients in some veg.

What are you feeding her? Sardines are very high it fat and oil which is prob = weight gain

Can you handle the cubes, how about just one meal in the morning and make the rest of the cubes last through a training session etc.

She wouldnt want to live here, mine get fed once a day eek:

I also don't feed any veggies as I don't think there is any nutritional value for dogs, it's literally just extra food. So if you want to feed them, they won't do any harm but i would stay away more from the high sugar fruit and veg though

A bit more info on fruits and vegetables for you which may be helpful.

Onions must not be fed to dogs in any form as they can cause haemolytic anaemia which can be fatal. Avocados contain persin which can produce problems in some animals.

All other vegetables may be fed however, for a dog to get any nutritional benefit from vegetables, they must either be pulped or frozen, otherwise they go out the way they went in and can only be used as source of fibre.

Oxalic acid can interfere with calcium absorption; so don't feed too much of Spinach or Chard.

Care should also be taken not to overfeed vegetables from the cruciferous family eg cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, swedes, turnips and broccoli to dogs as this may inhibit thyroid function.

Tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and aubergines all belong to the nightshade family of plants. Dogs who have arthritis may be sensitive to these foods which may exacerbate their condition. It is doubtful if raw potato can be digested successfully in any case.

Garlic is a useful addition to the diet as it performs an antiseptic, antibiotic, antifungal function.

Fruit

All except grapes (and raisins) which can cause kidney failure and death in even very small amounts. Bananas are an excellent source of pre-biotics essential for gut health.

Bear in mind fruit and/or vegetables should not make up more than 10% of diet and can have a laxative effect!

Vegetables and fruit provide many phytonutrients not available from animal sources some of which we as yet do not understand but some of which are thought to have health benefits such a carotenoids, lycopene, flavonoids, indoles, sulforaphanes, anthcyanins, sterols, elegiac acid and lignans

Kelp (seaweed) and alfalfa (lucerne) are examples of green supplements which provide a wide range of vitamins, minerals and neutraceuticals.

Re: Can you add veg to diet without affecting weight or other food amounts?

Thanks smokeybear for the info and ty to the others who replied

The sardines they get is a very tiny amount, i basically mush up 1 tin of sardines and 1 tin of mackeral and spread that out into an ice cube tray, then add little bit of turmeric, garlic and plaqueoff to each one and they get 1 cube each around lunchtime.
Mine are only fed 1 proper meal a day also, but they get just the little cube of fish in afternoon and a tiny bitesize bit of meat before bed (if i don't do this Charlie throws up bile for having an empty stomach too long)

I just find it difficult trying to add natural supplement things to thier diet as they only have the 1 tiny little dinner , and if things aren't concealed well in something tasty Tammy won't touch it

I know dogs don't really neeeeed fruit or veg but if it doesn't do any harm and makes it easier for me to get stuff in them then i just thought it may be a good solution

Actually doing the math, Tammy's dinners should be a bit smaller really
Think i'll just cut down her dinners a bit and see if it makes a difference and once thats sorted i'll think about the veg
