Unhappy I think Woody is depressed

The past few weeks or so, Woody keeps taking himself to the corner of the room laying with his nose under the cupboard and crying. First of all we thought one of his toys had gone under there, it hadnt we checked, moved the cupboard and put it back.

Now his even started just sitting gazing at nothing and wimpering. He keeps going and sitting at the top of the stairs on his own crying and ignoring us. And isnt eating all of his dinner.

First of all i thought he was grumping because mum and dad have gone away, but they came back after 2 days away and its continued, it gets worse as the day goes on!

Just looking at him laying there he doesnt look happy

I've said to mum and dad maybe we should take him to the vet but they said his just getting old, his only 4

Re: I think Woody is depressed

What breed is Woody?

What sort of exercise, training and mental stimulation does he get?

Re: I think Woody is depressed

There is a quick test u can do to see if the dog is depressed. If you pull the dogs fur up just at nape of neck and it stays up and slowly goes down the dogs depressed. A non-depressed dogs fur will go down very quickly. A vet showed me this many years ago when my dog was seriously I'll.

It sounds like the dog is i'll I would advise to take the dog to the vets.

Re: I think Woody is depressed

His a staffy cross, he doesnt get too much walks lately (i know sounds horrible) He goes out on the weekends with my sisters dogs.
He plays tug and fetch round the house gets rawhide to keep him busy.
But not much else other than that.

My mum is very old fashioned with Woody and believes he doesnt need toys and mental stimulation. And Im off work ill with no money and unable to be upright, so i feel quite helpless and its awful to see him like this.

Ive brought him a kong (thank god for overdrafts, lol) and its meant to arrive tomorrow, im hoping this perks him up a bit.

Im trying to pursuade my mum to get him some toys.

Thats to test for dehydration and has little reflection on an animals mental wellbeing.

I'd get him vet checked to rule out any medical issues, but tbh, it sounds like one very miserable and unhappy dog.

Why is no one walking him daily?
Burrowzig, Cleo38 and springerpete like this.

Can they not hire a dog walker? A high energy breed type, with no outlet for energy or frustration is a disaster waiting to happen. Boredom will create all manner of behavioural problems.

I think you need to sit down with your parents and have a strong word with them. They are failing Woody and not providing for even his most basic needs.

I'm going to talk to them tonight He isnt a very energetic dog to be honest, but i know he still needs walked and atleast have some mental stimulation.

Re: I think Woody is depressed

If you can afford another toy - a Kong Wobbler is great. Possibly the best toy I have ever bought for Charlie.

You can fill the large size with a cup of dry food (and sometimes I add chopped hotdogs or cheese) and the dog has to push it round the room for the treats to come out. It keeps Charlie moving and entertained for about an hour.
