Does it in large dogs.. no idea.

All I can recommend Krystalclear is that you continue your research. You will get lots of personal opinions, it's the nature of the nutrition question. I'm still learning and getting confused after months of research. If I were you and having 912142 kindly pointing out the that large breeds may need special consideration my response would be to await additional large breed knowledgeable owners to comment. In the mean time I would also look up some large breed specific forums and ask about nutrition there. Let us know what responses you find as I am sure it will be useful for others in the same situation. It also may teach me something new.

Your first port of call will be the breeder and continuing feeding the pup on that diet but whichever diet you choose to change over to you must do it slowly otherwise you could have a sickly pup on your hands.

I wish you all the best with your pup.

Re: Too much protein for a pupp?

Hi there,

I changed my pup who is a collie lab x over from RC to Orijen. I also - stupidly - introduced new things like pizzle sticks (bully Sticks) and she ended up with really runny poo for quite a while off and on. In the end I brought her to the vet who gave some meds and prescription sensitive food.

This was about 3 weeks ago and since then she has been fab. I have also over the last two weeks reintroduced orijen by mixing it with her prescription food. She is now on 75% Orijen and 25% Prescription and is doing really well. I like the Orijen simply because the ingredients look top notch and I am not a confident enough dog owner yet to start RAW. My only advice to you as I am not familiar with your breed of pup is to pick a good quality food, stick with it, change over by very small percentages (eg 80/20 for about 4 days, 60/30 for another few days etc.) and don't introduce anything else new to your pups diet at this time, until they are completely changed over.

Hope you have success

Gavs

Re: Too much protein for a pupp?

Looking around a lot, searching around large breeds. My understanding is still that protein isn't the real issue but should not be excessive. What should be of far more concern is the calcium and phosphorus levels.

It's vitally important that you maintain your pup's condition and don't let it get overweight. The feeding amounts listed for any food are guidelines only. Be prepared to adjust quantity depending on the look of your dog as each is different.

Out of preference, if wanting to feed commercial food I would look at Orijin Large Breed puppy food and Arcana Large Breed puppy food.

For reference you may like to look at https://www.msu.edu/~silvar/hips.htm

Wish you all the best.

Re: Too much protein for a pupp?

Thanks everyone for all your advice..it really does help. I was hoping to use Orijen/Acana or TOTW so will still lgo for one of these I think! I have no doubt once my little chap is home and settled I will soon have some kind of instinct as to what is right for him and it will get easier. It's just tough when you know nothing and are starting from scratch! Thanks again.
