Kennel cough vaccination

Has anyone had experience with their dog having a KC vacc?

Reason I ask is there is a possibility that Jenson may have to go in to boarding over one of the weekends later this month and I've noticed some of the kennels I'm looking at are requesting that the dogs are up to date with the KC vaccine.

I'm a bit intrigued as I thought that not only is the vacc for KC only active in the system for 4-6 months after being given, but also because of the various strains of KC, I was informed the vaccination is only around 50% effective.

I'm 90% sure I can get a family member to take him in but just got me thinking now, what are your thoughts on the KC situation.

Re: Kennel cough vaccination

My KCS recently got the KC vacc. I think its worth getting and is completely painless as if im correct he had it up the nose and is not injected. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Kennel cough vaccination

Kilo only had his KC vaccination to go into kennels overnight in the summer; if I had found a kennel that would take them without I would not have had him vaccinated as the efficacy is fairly debatable as it does not protect against all strains and I do not believe in getting vaccinations for the sake of it.

Same thought process as me, I'm not keen on pumping chemicals in to him just on the off chance it might be useful, my concern with that is the slim chances of causing more harm than good

Indeed; I don't intend to have him vaccinated against KC again unless I really have to either.

Re: Kennel cough vaccination

KC is the one vac I'm happy to do annually, or more often if need be. I've never heard of a bad reaction to it. It goes up the nose, not into the blood like the others. My dogs mix with a lot of others at agility shows, in close proximity, and I don't want them catching KC that can debilitate for a long time. Kite had hers earlier today.

But it does go straight into the blood stream; the intra nasal route is effective as it provides access directly to a very vascular area allowing drugs that can cross mucous membranes direct access to the bloodstream. The rate of absorption of some drugs is, from memory, comparable to intravenous administration and can achieve higher plasma levels of the drug than either subcutaneous or intramuscular injection - in other words, it enters the bloodstream faster than the traditional methods of injection.

The above is what I know of human drug administration - I would imagine the same principles apply to animals too.

Re: Kennel cough vaccination

We had Cleo vaccinnated for it last year when she went into kennels, only because they insisted on it.

Re: Kennel cough vaccination

If the dog is going into the Kennels then yes I would get it done. But if you are going to leave it with family.. Personally I would leave it. My puppy didn't get it because she will never be in Kennels so for me i dont see the point especially as like the flu jab for humans it only covers certain strains and is in no way gaurentee your dog wont get it.
