Injections

What is the longest you can leave between the dog having its first injection to having its second?

We got a puppy from a breeder and they said he had both his injections and was fine to go out, then a few days later they contacted us to say they made a mistake and he had only had his 1st injection and needed his 2nd. We took him to the vets and they said it was too long since the first one to have the 2nd one and needed to have the 1st one done again before the 2nd one.

However i spoke to the breeder and they said they had another dog at the time that had its first injection with my dog and they had just got the second one done when they realised they had missed it and it wasn't too late for the 2nd injection.

she said the vets are just trying to make more money out of us by telling us he needed to have his first again.

so who is telling the truth? the breeder or the vet?? basically i want to know how long you can leave it between the 1st and the 2nd injections?

Re: Injections

I must admit I haven't heard this before, but reading your post it does sound like the breeder doesn't know what they are talking about, I mean saying they had both jabs but "forgetting" that actually it was only the one.

If you are not happy with what your vet has said I would get the yellow pages out and call a few more vets in your area and ask the question.

2nd jab is usually done within 2 weeks of the first then pup can go out 7-10 days after that

Re: Injections

From what i understand the 1st vaccine is to activate the immune system of the pup, the second vaccine is to boost & increase the response speed of the immune system. if the pup is left too long between vaccinations, then the immune system is no longer activated & therefore should be re vaccinated from scratch.

I think the first one was on 31st July (rough guess as I've not got the vet documents at hand at the moment)

So a good 3 months has passed.

My advice is to have the pup vaccinated from scratch asap...

Some vets may do the second vaccine after 3 months, but the pups immune system will not be as effective as it should be.

If this was my pup, i would not take the risk.

Yeah, he's had his first injection redone and is due to have his second one tomorrow. We did this cos the vet told us that it was too long since the 1st one and obviously you trust what the vet says and want to make 100% sure he is vaccinated.

Its just obviously we paid the breeder for the 2 injections and then found out that the 2nd never happened and the first was too old to count so basically we paid them for 2 injections that were void. I spoke to the breeder and they are happy to pay back for the 2nd injection as it was their fault they forgot but they are refusing to refund for the 1st injection as they said their vet said it was still okay to have the 2nd after so long and she said that our vets are just trying to take our money for nothing by having the 1st one again.

Its not a great deal of money in the grand scheme of things, especially where your pups health is concerned, but interesting to know if vets and breeders are just out for your money at the end of the day.

interesting to know who's telling the truth

Re: Injections

How old is your pup? From reading what you have put it sounds like it is quite a bit older than 8 weeks old. I take it as the breeder hasn't jabbed it up properly it hasn't been socialised properly either? My advise would be to make sure you book onto so good puppy training classes ASAP and get the pup out and about as soon as possible.

Have a ring round a few vets & i would lay money on them saying pretty much what i have said.
Also, ask the breeder for contact details of the vet they use & ask them too.

This is just my opinion here...
but i recon the breeder is waffling & probably doesn't know a great deal...

Vets can be expensive & yes some do take the pee where money & medication are concerned.
But as a whole most vets are in the business for the welfare of animals.
