Looks like DT and myself are thinking along the same lines here - and I agree with her that Naturediet is excellent for colitis! Claire

Re: Weimaraner Puppy - Blood in stools

[QUOTE=Steve Kelly;1061408794]Hi all,

We have just got ourselves a beautiful Weimaraner Puppy who is approximately 9 weeks old.

After a couple of days we noticed that she had worms (which is fairly common I believe) and took her to the vets, where she had the first of her injections and was given the once over by the vet, with a clean bill of health.

I have now noticed that there is blood in her stools which doesn't appear to be going. I have searched the net and found differing opinions in that this could be anything from being removed from her mother and rehomed / overeating / an infection.

Despite this the dog is lively, playful and eating/drinking well.

Is there any mucos (clear jelly like substance) in the stools as well and are they on the loose side too. If the is specks of blood and mucos then that is usually a sign of a bit of collitis meaning the bowel is inflammed.

As well as worms there are other protozoa parasite infections called giardia and coccidia which can occur in pups. Not all wormers do these too, although panacur paste does do giardia.

If she has a very bad worm load then you will need to discuss with your vet a worming programme, as you have to make sure all the life stages are eradicated and broken. Any eggs or larvae left can start them all up again.

Is there any foul smell associated with her stools apart from the ordinary,
foul smelling stools can indicate a bacterial or other infection.

Any prolonged problems its always better to consult your vet again. They may suggest doing a 3 day fecal sample that checks out for, bacteria, parasites and other things, if he thinks there is an underlying problem.

Re: Weimaraner Puppy - Blood in stools

All,

Thanks for all your advice.

I have had a look around the net and symptoms do point towards colitis. From what I have read, I just have to address the diet and if the symptoms persist think about taking her to a vet. Is this correct?

I have just given her a lunchtime feed and believe me there is nothing wrong with her appetite!!

Thanks again,

Steve and Leia

NatureDiet is the only thing that has ever given my dog colitis! I agree though that it's good for most dogs - just not mine!

I would encourage the OP not to wait for too long before getting the pup to a vet if the diarrhoea continues though - diarrhoea can cause pups to go downhill VERY quickly

Re: Weimaraner Puppy - Blood in stools

Think I would be inclined to talk to the vet - he may suggest a poo sample.
what I personally would not be in favour of doing myself thoughis changing my dog to a dry recommended by the vet without any samples being taken.
just my views - and no disrepect to any vet but what t=some often tend to do is automaically think 'food intolerance'

Re: Weimaraner Puppy - Blood in stools

We had this with our Foxhound pup last year. It was worms, after a good wormer all cleared up and no problems since.

Re: Weimaraner Puppy - Blood in stools

when we got Colin he had runny poo and the first vet put it down to new home change of water ect but it didnt go and then i started to see blood in his poo and also very mucusy and it realy stank. took him staight back to the vet saw a different one and he told me all the info i gave him it was colitice. was given a weeks worth of antibiotics and some pro-kolin and hes great now. i also give him 5ml of extra vergin oliveoil and 5ml of actimel every morning and he loves it.
think you need to go back the vets and have a chat. Colin was a bit dehidrated when we got him but was eating and drinking, was a bit quiet for a puppy but that was becaus we were strangers to him ect but hes totaly changed now hes a great little boy only nips when hes really excited but other than that people cant beleve how chilled and well behaved he is for a puppy of 15 weeks.
hope you get thing sorted.

i wouldnt leave it i would take her to the vets now, it could be colitis but as SDH has said it could also be giardia or some other condition...she need a stool sample taking.

.what wormer have you and her breeder been using?
