Sensitive Stomach - Supplements?

Hi everyone this is my first post.
I have a 6 year old Akita called Thai and i was wondering if anyone can inform me of a supplement i can give him to settle his stomach, such as a probiotic.

He has always had a sensitive stomach and randomly will have soft stools for a few days but now that hes older its becoming worse. He is currently eating Arden Grange but is going to be moved to a Raw diet next week.

Can anyone advise me on a good supplement?

Re: Sensitive Stomach - Supplements?

CSJ do a range of herbal mixes, i know theres definately one designed to sooth the digestive system and reduce sensitivities but there could be another one.

I have CSJ dem bones(treats but they do a mix thats the same) which are granulated charcoal(good for cleaning teeth and charcoal is renowned for neutralising toxins), parsley(for fresher breath) and seaweed(again good for the teeth and stomach). They always go down well with my dog when he's got a funny tummy

I think also dorwest have a powder designed to help, also a spoonful of natural probiotic yoghurt is good for the good bacteria which can help the digestive system.

The CSJ one you are thinking of is called 'Heal' we found it to be great when our young dog had a bad case of the squits over a weekend and someone bought us a little bit to a show. Since then have kept a pot in and given it to any of them at the first sign of anything untoward - it has worked a treat...

Tree Barks Powder by Dorwest Herbs might be another to consider.

Vets Kitchen also do a digestive supplement, but ive yet to come across anyone who has tried it.

Re: Sensitive Stomach - Supplements?

Protexin do a range that have sorted by boys sensitive tum right out. Started him on the profiber and then just the normal one.

Also bionic biotics are absolutely worth a look.

This is supposed to be very good

Tree Barks powder - Dorwest

Has the vet done any investigations to see if there is any infection or bacteria lurking - as I understand it - there are some I believe that will exhibit the problem / normal / problem you are seeing.

With regards to raw, is your dog used to having raw bones? the reason I ask is that some older dogs teeth may struggle with such a switch (many won't) - but if it does, then it could cause problems.

Raw might cure the problem if grain sensitivity is an issue - but if it's an allergy to a particular meat, then it's quite possible nothing will change

If nothing else is changing, then to me, the intermitted problem needs some further investigation. My friends dog did this for quite some time before eventually just continually having problems - he did nearly die, it was awful - he is now fighting fit - and fed on a grain free diet - she uses a herbal dietary supplement for him, I will try and find out what it is.

Another alternative to consider could be grain free foods such as Orijen if you can afford it; if you can't - then Barking Heads and Simpsons Premium are too more affordable grain free options, I believe JWB also do one which a lot of people swear by.

Bionic Biotics has been a godsend here. Really helped my little one get more resilient, good for skin and coat too.

Highly recommended. Protexin do a range of probiotics for dogs that are good too.

Has your dog been tested for campylobacter infection? The symptoms fit, and its highly infectious.

See a vet. You can't just give a random variety of "supplements" and hope for the best. You don't even know what the problem (if any) is!

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but pet owners, who do not have any veterinary medicine qualifications, but who insist on self diagnosing and treating, are putting their dogs, health at risk.

Re: Sensitive Stomach - Supplements?

My collie has colitis and even though on a grain free diest ocassionally had soft stool with mucous and small amounts of blood in it. Eventually after several months of using single proteins beef came up as the culprit. It was great finding the cause but trying to source beef free foods to mix with his complete that were also grain (including rice) free was a tad difficult. Most have meat / meat derivatives in which will include beef. He now eats Bozita in jelly (most of them but not all) and hasn't had any problems at all since.
