Which of these foods is best?

Hi

I have a 25kg Boxer/American Bulldog cross that I rescued from the RSPCA in Jan. He's 20 months old.

I can't afford to buy the really great dry food for him, but I want to feed the best that I can afford.

He was fed Chappies complete dry at the RSPCA, and I gradually moved him off this onto Pet's at Home own brand dog food (Advanced Nutrition). This was on offer at £30 for 2 12kg bags.

I've just discovered a 'buy one get one free' offer for Whites Premium - 15kg bags, which are usually £40 each.

Can you please tell me which one seems to be the best for me to feed him (I've put the data below), or can anybody recommend an alternative that I can buy for a maximum of £40 for 2 sacks? My dog trainer recommended that I keep his protein as close to 22% as possible.

Advanced Nutrition:
Fresh Chicken (min. 26%), Brown Rice, Maize, Potato Protein, Maize Gluten Meal, Rice Protein, Sugar Beet Pulp, Poultry Fat, Poultry Digest, Brewers Yeast, Linseed, Egg Powder, Minerals, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Methionine, Yucca Extract, Marigold Meal, L-Carnitine, Beta Carotene.

Protein: 26% Crude Fibre 3%, Oils & Fats 14.5%, Crude Ash 11%, Moisture 8%

Whites Premium
Chicken (26%), Rice (26%), Barley, Poultry fat, Sugar beet pulp, Fish meal, Brewers yeast, Yucca extract, Minerals, Vitamins, Omega 3

Protein 22% Oil 8% Fibre 2.5% Ash 8.5% Vitamin A 11,250iu/kg Vitamin D3 1,688 iu/kg Vitamin E 92iu/kg Copper 15iu/kg

Thanks Pete

Re: Which of these foods is best?

Of those I;d go with whites hun. Advance nutrition's only meat is fresh chicken, which has the percentage put down before it's had the moisture and fat removed, which meant you'll actually end up with about 5% actual meat in there. Plus it has maize which is always best avoided if possible.

There's always skinners too, not on offer but stick to the salmon and rice and duck and rice and you can get two bags delivered for about £40 from vetuk.

Also, look at the price to feed per day to see how much it's truly costing you.

For example, Orijen (which is about the best kibble available) is the same to feed per day as arden grange. I'm not suggesting orijen as I know it's out of a lot of peoples price range (mine included) because of the initial outlay. But just using it as an example of how deceptive it it just looking at the price per bag.

Re: Which of these foods is best?

Deffinatly agree with lyceum on checking how much per day it will cost to feed...I have looked at so many types of dog food and compared their daily feeding guides becuase our new boy has come home from kennels on Burns...normally this would be out of our price range but I feed alot less of it than i would if i was feeding skinners/simpsons etc so the bag will last longer before it runs out

Re: Which of these foods is best?

Just to add Pete, if you want to go for the Advance Nutrition range, have a look at the Sensitive - that one doesnt have maize whereas all the rest do.

P@H will also exchange, refund if your dog doesn't like it no matter how much you've used. Also it may be worth giving them a ring and see if they will do a nutritional consultation. If your store does them, they will have chat with you re the foods and then give you a small bag free. You can direct them toward what you like best quite easily.

Their Wainwrights range is also v good.

Re: Which of these foods is best?

Thanks all

I had the nutritional consultation at Pets at Home - that's how I ended up with Advanced Nutrition, as they told me it was the best for the price.

He seems to do well on both the AN and Whites - but he doesn't really suffer with upset stomach on anything.

The thing I find confusing. On the Orijen website, for my size of dog, it has the same daily guideline amounts as the Advanced Nutrition! So I thought the dog would need around the same amount of food?

I did look at Skinners, but avoided it as the meat varieties have Maize and then 'meat meal' as top 2 ingregients, and the duck and salmon varieites have Rice as the top ingregient.

I thought it was better to buy a food with a recognisable meat variety as the main ingredient, and to avoid 'meat meal' or 'meat derivitives' etc?

The other thing that confuses me - for my dog, White's recommend 285-315g per day. Origen recommend 275-375g. I feed 300g, which is right in the centre for both foods - doesn't that make the White's much better value? I would have thought he would need a lot less Orijen than White's?

Def go for the Whites out of the 2 initially mentioned. Avoid salt at all costs ( first food mentioned contains salt )...this is really bad for the kidneys.
The offer Whites have on at the moment is brilliant so take advantage of it. After the promo is over, you have a Whites stockist in Yorkshire who offers free delivery if you wish to stick to that brand Holmfirth Bailey / Homepage
