Feeding a greyhound!

We have just met and reserved a beautiful almost 4 year old Blue greyhound today and fingers crossed he is coming home on saturday! I need some help with what to feed him though...our last greyhound went to the bridge 2 years ago and we were feeding her wafcol but im guessing things have changed a bit since then?

I have looked into foods such as wainwrights, skinners, JWB etc as we were going to adopt a labrador a few weeks ago but that didnt work out in the end... are these foods ok for a ex-racer?

Any advice would be great

Re: Feeding a greyhound!

My two ex-racers are fed a mixture of Orijen fish kibble and BARF - it suits them really well. They're good weights and have nice teeth, skin & coat, good digestion, plenty of energy etc.

But, all the foods you mentioned - James Wellbeloved, Wainwrights and Skinners F&T duck/salmon are all ok too. Arden Grange, Acana, Fish4Dogs, Simpsons and Natural Dog Food Company are all good too, if you're looking for a dry food. Naturediet, Wainwrights, Natures Menu and Natures Harvest are all very good wet foods if you want a wet or mixed diet.

Whatever you go with, make sure you get some of the food he is currently being fed on - most racers are fed on cheap cereal packed racing mixes, and they're very bland so feeding a good quality kibble with good ingredients straight away will upset his stomach, you need to introduce slowly

If you're interested in the BARF - raw meat, bones, offal & vegetable diet - then there are plenty of threads on that here.

Well done on rescuing an ex-racer, you star

Re: Feeding a greyhound!

Congratulations, looking forward to pics!

What will suit your new addition is quite individual so can be a bit of trial and error. Many grey owners joke that smelly farts are a breed thing, but its more likely that something in their food isn't agreeing with their digestion if its not a one off. I know after trying various chicken based kibbles with my boy that it always results in soft poops and toxic farts, so steer clear now. Here's some Food label help so you can try to decide for yourself what's better of the options available in your budget. dog food analysis is also useful. Don't forget to work out what it costs to feed per day to compare foods rather than go on just the bag price as some expensive ones work out much more affordable than first appears and also realise some aren't quite such good value.

My greys are currently on skinners F&T salmon, Throp was on Fish4dogs salmon before i needed to cost cut & would feed both on that if i could afford it as he did great on it.

Many groups still preach that retired greys should have no more than about 20% protein, but i don't think its quite as simple and depends on the quality (is protein from animal or plant source?) and quantity consumed, many higher protein foods the dog eats much less than it would on the 20% food. So i wouldn't get too hung up on that rule, the fish4dogs is 26% can can safely say had no change in energy level and the orijen sixstar's dogs are on is higher still.

Re: Feeding a greyhound!

Thanks for the replies...I think we are between fish4dogs and simpsons sensitive at the moment for a starting point!

My last two greys had terrible wind but we just thought it was normal...am much more informed now!

ETA we are so so soooooo excited, he is a stunner and was amazing with my children I would have 100 retired greys if we had room...we decided to adopt a lab which was new to us having never had one before but unsuprisngly we have ended up back with greyhounds, they are amazing

Re: Feeding a greyhound!

We had our homecheck today and it turns out that Blue is currently being fed Burns at the kennels (the girl i spoke to on the phone said it was a basic kibble that they got as traders LOL) so we have bought a small bag of that and are going to change him slowly onto simpsons salmon and potato and see how that goes

Re: Feeding a greyhound!

I agree with all above - everything except lamb as it goes straight through Eddie. Plus he eats anything else he can get his teeth round or steal or beg including the berries off the bushes (raspberries and brambles).

Good luck and enjoy x
