Advice on medication - arthritis

I am new to this and am hoping that someone can help. I have a 9 year old Golden Retriever. My pet insurance is about the reach its limit of what it will pay out towards his arthritis treatment and the pills are around £80 per month. He gets 100mg of Rimadyl twice a day and 227mg of Previcox once a day. Does anyone know of any alternatives to these treatments as I will not be able to afford this per month for long? Thanks very much

Re: Advice on medication - arthritis

Hi. Sorry to hear about your Goldie. My goldie is 6 and has crutiate ligament damage which will lead to arthritis, he is on metacam which I have just picked up today £45 for 5-6 weeks worth depending on weight of the dog. Not all dogs take to metacam as it can cause tum upsets. I was thinking of putting a topic of my own to see if anyone knows of any long term side effects of metacam, but I guess you would want to know as well if you use it.
Have you got him on any of the recommended oils for arthritis

Hi Craig,

Below is a link for some NSAIDs alternatives here in the U.S. You might want to see if they have it for the U.K.

Hope your dog feels better.

Thanks very much for all your tips. I will check out the website and ask the vet about prescriptions. What are the recommended oils? The vet never gave me any advice and lots of websites and saying different things. Thanks again.

green lipped mussel is also a natural inflammatory so that might help.

Re: Advice on medication - arthritis

Make sure you are giving enough, some complimentery recommendations seem to give the wrong advise according to my vet. My goldie is on 1200mg glucosamine and 400-600mg of chondroitin but he is quite light at 34kgs

Red face Re: Advice on medication - arthritis

Hello

this is my first post here, so sorry if not quite right. Green lipped muscle can help with arthritis, but gave my dog really upset stomach. Glucosamine can help, but may take up to six weeks before see any improvement. I get a lot of my Medications and supplements from the following website;

vetmedicinesupermarket

they are one of cheapest I have seen and do not charge for postage. pretty quick delivery, It was the first time I have got prescription meds fron internet so I rang them up first, person I spoke to was very helpful.

hope this is useful

Horley
