Puppy stopped eating

Roxy is 10 weeks old now and had been eating really well but just over a week ago began to not eat all her meals, i mentioned it to the vet and he said to bring her back in 2 weeks , which is next friday, she is now eating a little dried food but wont touch her pedigree chum puppy food, last night we gave her some ham that we had and she loved it!!! So it seems she has just gone off her usual food, can anyone suggest what we can give her as she has lost weight, and obviously that is a worry. One other thing she has stacks of energy and isnt looking or acting ill seems fine in every other way.

Re: Puppy stopped eating

Firstly I would get her off Pedigree, that is probably the worst food there is out there. Rule of thumb is if you can buy it in a supermarket, it's probably crap.

Some good wet foods:
Wainwrights from Pets at Home
Nature's Menu
Naturediet
Raw Food

For dried food I can reccomend:
Skinners
Arden Grange
Wainwrighs again from Pets at Home
CSJ (google it)

What dried food are you currently feeding her?

Re: Puppy stopped eating

i agree with NicoleW, generally if it can be bought in the supermarket it's not good. I use CSJ which can fool you into thinking it's crap because it's very cheap(i pay £11.50 for a 15kg bag) but it's actually really good food. I also use wainwrights wet food as it looks like human pate but smells better(i don't actually eat it though)

Re: Puppy stopped eating

Oh yes do get the pup of the pedigree stuff have you tried fish4dogs mousse it has a really good smell even to us and most dogs love it. I wouldn't give her ham as you will not want your dog to start begging for food at the table when you are eating. Plus you could get one of those ball things with a hole in it and put some of her dry food in that that way it becomes a game.

You must be careful that you don't encourage her to become a fussy eater by trying all sorts.

Personally I would soak her dry food a little and then add a sardine with some of the oil and then give her that - if she doesn't eat it lift it and fridge it then offer at next meal - see how that goes.

Re: Puppy stopped eating

Hi Lorna,

Sounds like you are now well and truly enrolled into puppyhood

Unfortunately this is one of the first stumbling blocks and not easy to get around. As you know I'm a great believer in "patient persistance" so when Heidi hit this stage, I was having no messing - "That or nothing!!" They like to push our buttons and food is usually one of the first they press.

Bless her, Heidi genuinely wasnt keen on eating kibble on it's own. After a year of PP, I threw in the towel, put her onto wet food and we havent looked back.

It's not easy deciding if she's taking the Michael or genuine. If she's taking the Michael, then you will be changing foods as the whim suits her. (good luck with that one lol)

As mentioned, Pedigree isnt a v good food and you can get far better for your money. Wainwrights trays suit Heidi the best and at £8.25 for a box of 12 it's one of the more economical good quality wets.

I'm presuming you've sorted the night times and she's now moved on to something else to keep Mum and Dad on their toes

Sandie x
