Kennel cough

My 19 week old Min. Schnauzer has Kennel Cough. My vet has prescribed Benylyn. I'm wondering how long should I keep her away from other dogs .... she is longing to play again. Thank you for helping?

Re: Kennel cough

Hopefully this should help.

10-Day Period

The general isolation time required for dogs afflicted with kennel cough is at least 10 days. The animal must be confined to an area free of humans (beyond the caretakers) and especially other dogs or animals that are susceptible to contracting the disease. When properly treated, the dog's wheezing cough should begin to subside within 10 to 14 days. However, once the animal has recovered there is slight possibility it may still shed the virus for several weeks. Dogs must be medically treated while in isolation and should not be released until the coughing has fully ceased

Re: Kennel cough

Thank you for your response, I am grateful for this information. I was told "about a week" but I wasn't convinced by this. Now I know. This is a brilliant place for us "new mums"! Sincerely

Elizabeth

Re: Kennel cough

A critical element to a speedy and uneventful recovery is to rest the dog fully for at least a week - not easy in a pup though! There was a research article on this some 10 odd years ago which I have not seen widely quoted, but rest was proven at the time to be more effective than drugs at resolving kennel cough quickly and without residual coughing.

Re: Kennel cough

Sorry your pup is poorly, it is hard to keep them entertained while they are isolated... When ours have had it we did things like searching nose games and frozen stuffed kongs to keep them entertained for longer

Re: Kennel cough

That's so interesting, I have noticed that Ffion wants to go back to sleep almost as soon as she wakes in the morning and rests for another hour or so .... this is not like her at all. It's later in the day when she seems to get playful again. I can see now that this may be helping her to recover and she is getting better each day. Thank you so much.

Re: Kennel cough

Thanks for these ideas .... It's so hard to entertain a "poorly puppy" I'll play with her when she gets restless.
