Very picky Chihuahua

Help!! I have a very picky Chihuahua named Chi Chi, she is 10 months old. She doesn't like regular hard dog food and she will not eat canned dog food. But she will eat any fruit you give to her or that falls on the floor lol. She wont even eat mac and cheese or hot dogs (which my youngest try's to feed her). Anyone have a problem like this???

Re: Very picky Chihuahua

Lots of dogs will be picky eaters if given the chance. Your dog has to eat properly or it will not be healthy.

It may take tough love but you need to work on the fact that a dog will not starve itself. I recommend you choose a good food that you want to feed (it doesn't matter if it's wet or dry although some dogs may prefer wet) and put the food down at meal time. If the dog doesn't eat it in 20 minutes, pick the food up and the dog gets NOTHING (no treats) until the next meal time when you repeat the process.

It might take a few days but your dog will not starve itself and it'll eventually learn to eat it's food when it is given.

Alternatively you can look at feeding raw which most dogs love.

Hope this helps

Re: Very picky Chihuahua

She might, like my shih tzu, not be too keen on eating hard biscuits as they've only got little jaws (or he's plain lazy).

Pick a high quality (high meat content) food such as Wainrights, NatureDiet or Natures Harvest etc, and stick to it. She knows she doesn't have to eat everything you give her if you keep giving her so much choice and not enough of a chance to actually taste or get used to one food.

Simply offer her her meal, leave it down for 20 minutes, if she's not interested, take it up and wait til her next mealtime. She won't starve herself if there's nothing wrong with her.

If you do think there might be something medically wrong with her, it's probably best to go to the vets and get everything checked out, just in case her lack of appetite is down to something more sinister. She's most likely just being picky though. Good Luck!

I recommend you go to Pets at Home or your local Pet Shop and buy a couple of Naturediet trays or Wainwrights trays. You can always warm these slightly - I'd probably try her with the lamb varieties first - not many dogs turn them down!! Good luck!

As McKenzie said above, you should make sure she is not given "mac and cheese or hot dogs" - this diet is not suitable for a dog. I know you say your children try to feed her these and she doesn't eat them, it's still not a good idea for children to hand bits of food to dogs.

Re: Very picky Chihuahua

Is this your pregnant dog you're talking of? If so I would be VERY concerned that she is not eating properly right now

Re: Very picky Chihuahua

She has been to the vet. We tried science diet, and eukanuba. Yes she is pregnant. We had her for only 2 weeks when we found out she was in pup. But the old owner said she was a very picky eater to begin with. She goes to the vet every two weeks. She is a very healthy dog. It just worries me a little on how she eats. I cant even get her to eat bacon strips, biscuits .

Why are you trying to get her to eat bacon strips and biscuits? Unless you mean dry dog food ...

How do you know she is on day 57?

my sisters got chihuahuas and they don't like dry food all the time they get james wellbeloved pouch between them, they also have almo nature chicken, burns wet, applaws, and their favourite lily's kitchen (it's £2.20 a tin but well worth it if they love it) the eldest will be 14 in november and the youngest is 3
my last chi died a few years ago she was 21 years old and was always picky with what she ate but always ate some naturediet food.

Re: Very picky Chihuahua

It's actually a Chihuahua x JRT, that's heavily pregnant, so should be eating more than a few odds and sods of fruit. See the post in the Introduction section about a 9 month old pregnant Chihuahua, the OP here has posted more info there.

Clover is a Yorkie /Chi x and is very picky with her food . Tried everything for her first year, the only thing she will eat consistantly is ziwipeak dry and wet. It looks expensive, but a little goes a long way
