Dog home made food and nutrition books??

I have been doing a lot of research about home made dog food, and many internet recipes I have read people have said it hasn't got enough supplements in or nutrition and so on... I wondered if anyone can recommend any books that does have recipes in but also explains about all the nutrition and what supplements to add to make sure your dog gets everything it needs at each stage of it's life.

Any help about recommended books will be a great help.

Thank you

Lizz :)

Re: Dog home made food and nutrition books??

Depends what you mean by home made dog food, for me it means taking the wrapper off a chicken. There are plenty of resources on the internet dealing with canine nutrition, mostly in regard to commercial foods granted, but the requirements stay the same whatever you feed. If you are talking about cooking meat and veg or baking etc for your pooch then why not try a barf diet instead. The more research you do into canine dietary requirements the more you realise that raw is the way to go.

I know it doesn't help with the nutritional side of things, but this site has some great treat recipes and plenty of helpful tips CrazyCrumb Dog Treats

I've got one called 'Natural Health for Dogs and Cats' by Richard H Pitcairn DVM PhD.

It has quite a number of recipes etc.

I don't know whether its still in print as I bought it a long time ago.

Re: Dog home made food and nutrition books??

I'm a raw feeder so incredibly biased and opinionated I do not believe any diet needing supplements is a species appropriate diet. As a result my recipe list is as shown in this link: Raw Feeding Recipes

It's not for everyone and you need to do some research especially what to feed them to start with. It also requires research to bring costs down but once that's done it should be more no expensive than many normal dog food brands. Lots of information in some of the stickies. There are generally two main types: Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) and Prey Model Raw (PMR). People often feed something in between. To put it simply.. BARF'ers think dogs are omnivorous, PMR'ers think they are carnivores. Both in my view are better than dog food or home cooking.

As a general overview of dog/cat nutrition without getting too complex I found http://files.championpetfoods.com/OR...hite_Paper.pdf to be useful. If you want complex lists of which vitamins etc are required you may want to look at some of the material related to BARF.
