Hip problem??

Something weird happened to Hannah in the park today and Im wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar??
She was running around off lead when she suddenly slowed right down and looked really wobbly on her back legs. She kept lying down and rolling over and when she stood her back end appeared weak (like those badly bred GSD you sometimes see).
I checked her back legs and paws and couldnt find anything wrong except abit of grit stuck in between her pads. Then I picked her up (for a cuddle and to see how much effort it would take to carry her home!) and I felt a definite click in her left hip joint. When I put her down she was abit tentative but soon got back up to speed.

She is 3 years old and never had a problem, also not a large breed that is prone to hip issues. Could she have turned too quickly and popped her hip joint out slightly??, or is there anything else I should worry about?
Im going to keep her on short lead walks for a few days as she wouldnt make a fuss if it did hurt.

Re: Hip problem??

There is a thing called Luxating Patella which affect small dogs.

Or, if she's a dachshund, it could be back problems

A lot of people don't seem to realise that hip problems are not limited to large breeds - indeed, there are some large breeds who are not renowned for hip problems and testing is generally not recommended or asked for in dogs to be bred from - conversely, there are some smaller breeds where hipscoring is increasing - which can only be due to possible problems in those breeds.

Having said all that - whilst not a vet, I would think it highly unlikely it's a hip problem suddenly manifesting itself in an otherwise healthy dog at 3 years old whatever the breed or predisposition to HD - as by now, the muscles should have developed sufficiently to protect and support the joints -

I would also be leaning towards from what you've said - luxating patella or a back problem.

The vet should be able to test for LP, both conservative and surgical options are available as treatment - backs are a little trickier - if it was me and I couldn't get her to the vets over the weekend, I would be keeping her calm and quiet until you can do so on Monday - without wanting to frighten you, back problems can be very serious and damaging if left untreated - and if it is LP then you don't want to be throwing a ball for her and need more structured exercise (had both here on two different dogs )

Hope she is OK - let us know what the vet says.

Re: Hip problem??

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep an eye on her over the weekend and give her lead walks only, so how it goes.
Im hoping it wasnt a back thing but the fact she went all weak and wobbly on both back legs at once makes me suspicious. I was hoping she would have avoided issues like this coz although she is def Daxie shape she is slightly shorter bodied and longer legged then a full Daschund. TBH she was walking normally by the time we left the park!! Would a vet be able to tell if it was her back if it wasnt causing her any more problems when I took her??

They could certainly have a suspicion as they would be able to perform certain tests and manipulations and judge from her responses.

When my eldest girl ruptured a disc in her neck after a head clash with my boy (it wasn't immediately obvious) - initially, metacam settled her down, then she very quickly deteriorated over the weekend - frightened the hell out of me - she was stood outside screaming and unable to move - with early signs of nerve damage - I was on my knees by the time we left her at the specialists

In her case, she had burst a disc in her neck - that itself wasn't causing the pain, it was the debris that had got into her spinal cord - thankfully - she made what was nothing short of a miraculous and speedy recovery - that was 2 years ago this month, and now at nearly 9, she bounces around here like a puppy

Similarly, initial LP may be intermittentenly visible (i.e. blink and you could miss it) - but the vet should be able to manipulate the joint for that as well and give you an initial diagnosis - as you already realise - just keep her as calm and steady as possible - and fingers crossed the vet will say it is something and nothing.

My eldest girl's daughter fell awkwardly at 6 months while playing with the others and if you had seen her walking - it was terrifying - the emergency VET OTOH said on a scale of 1 to 10, the limp was a 1 - I hipscored her earlier this year at 2.5 and she came back 3/4

Re: Hip problem??

We did'nt find out Banjo had HD till he was 3 but thinking back I think 90% of his wobblyness was down to his neck problems but fixed now the vet will be able to do tests there & then on her back & neck hopefully no further investigations will be needed & it was just one of those things x
